Is there a site or free service where I can watch Japanese shows with Japanese subtitles that’s not anime.
If you already have streaming or DVDs, you can check if there are Japanese dubs, like the Japanese dub of squid game or Stranger Things on Netflix.
I really liked Erased on Netflix 僕のいない町. My mom liked Terrace House.
I didn’t like 恋しぬ2人, a Japanese live action on Netflix.
I like watching レシピ or ゲーム on YouTube.
Google “J Dramas”. Good news, once you watch 3 Japanese shows, the algorithm will start recommending them to you.
I looked up Japanese songs, and dances. Now YouTube is recommending song competitions, and interviews.
Ah, just like in English , YouTube’s Japanese subtitles can be hit or miss.
Hope that helps!
I seond the Netflix recommendation. May depend on your location, but I’m in Germany and there are many movies and tv shows in Japanese with Japanese subs.
Some of my not-anime favourites are:
Samurai Gourmet (very approachable every day Japanese)
The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House
Switched
I will be your bloom
Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning (yes, anime-based, but a real stand-alone live action movie)
Rurouni Kenshin: The Final (see above)
You can also lower the playback speed, which I found helpful in the beginning because my brain would always lack behind a few seconds.
Viki (its like Netflix for Asian Dramas) is really good and has some solid Japanese jdramas with Japanese subs.
Netflix recently has gotten quite good too. Alice in Borderland is amazing.
YuYu’s podcast on YouTube is quite enjoyable and he has subs on his videos.
Also some Japanese News TV stations have live streams on YouTube.
Disney+ also have a few Japanese shows.
