With Real Kana, you choose from the provided categories, Frequency, JLPT, Kanken, Numbers, And Sentences and then you choose a flashcard deck within the chosen category. This one is more challenging that typical flashcard apps because it asks you to type in the kana for the given word rather than just saying it out loud. In order to use the site however, there is a one-time $5 membership fee. They also have an iPhone app if you want to buy it.
漢検王 (Kanken Ou) is has a similar concept to the aforementioned site, Real Kana, however this one is more focused on the Kanji Kentei, which is an exam that tests Kanji proficiency. Furthermore, this website is free unlike Real Kana. Additionally, this site is a bit more challenging as it gives you a limited amount of time to type in the answer for each given word. And as you answer more words correctly, the hidden timer will allow less and less time.
Kanjibox is an app for iPhone and Android that tests you on several aspects of Japanese. These include: Correct Kana reading, Choosing the correct readings form a single Kanji, choosing the correct English translation for a given Kanji or choosing the correct Kanji for a given English translation, choosing the correct reading/pronunciation for a given vocabulary word, Writing kana correctly, Writing Kanji correctly, and testing of basic grammar. They also have a basic flashcard mode too. This app is multiple choice unlike the former two and I’ve found it useful for studying the meanings of vocabulary words. This app is $5 on the App Store and Google play store.
