Reset?

I’ve been using Bunpro for a while now (reviewing N4 and wanting to prep for N3 at this point) but recently I’ve been really struggling to understand which grammar points a review is asking me for and even if I do understand I feel confused about how to answer. I thought that maybe it was all the recent updates and my changing textbook paths that might be reason but maybe that’s just me making up an excuse for my bad retention/retrieval…?

So my thought was whether I should just reset and start over, or if there are any setting tweaks or other tips anyone might recommend…?

Personally I don’t think resetting is the answer. If you are at a point where you are having a point going back to the start and redoing all the points you actually know is easier but pointless. It kinda sounds like you just need to sit down for a while and do some cram sessions. Also are you doing anything else to learn japanese while using bunpro? Because I noticed as soon as I started reading in japanese (poorly) that the language does start to click in place. But if you are only doing reviews then its a bit hard to really see how it all lies up. But no I don’t think there is a setting for this, but I also don’t think resetting is the correct option, because you will just end up back here.

I’m plodding through the second half of N4. Is it “everything” you’re having trouble with, or certain grammar points?

I’ve definitely had a hard time with:

  • all the ように grammar points
  • あげる/くれる/もらえ
  • all the humble/honorific grammar points

So far, I’ve been able to get un-stuck by looking up other resources or just analyzing the Bunpro descriptions more carefully, but I only do that after my frustration builds up enough…

To be honest, I don’t really understand the cram session function, I’ve never used it…that’s my fault

I take private lessons 3 times a week self-studying in between and I also do wanikani and such.

I’ve been meaning to give a serious try to straight up reading in Japanese but so far I feel overwhelmed by that sort of task

I also find that there are some points where I really struggle to understand which answer Bunpro wants. Luckily, they usually tell you that the one you entered works, but they are looking for a different one. I’ve found that those little lightbulb clues give pretty good prompts. For example, I kept forgetting the のに grammar point, but noticed that the lightbulb said “emphasis on means” and kinda used that as a prompt for when they wanted that answer.

I also think that cramming can really help solidify the concepts if you are struggling to remember a large amount of material.

If I look at it in more detail it’s most often certain points I guess and in particular it’s reading the little lightbulb bit that makes me feel like I have no idea what they’re asking for…

Is there another resource that you especially recommend?

When was the last time you ventured into Cram? I agree that the old version was more complicated than it needed to be, however we completely revamped it and hopefully it’s a lot more understandable/easy to use. If it’s still tripping you up feel free to either respond here/privately message me and we can have a chat about it! Might be some more things we can tweak :man_scientist:

You can bookmark the ones you keep getting wrong, then go to Log in - Japanese Grammar Explained | Bunpro and re-read the grammar point information closely. When you have a bunch of similar-looking grammar points, it helps a LOT to read the descriptions side by side in different browser tabs instead of trying to read one at a time.

The lightbulb hints actually do a good job connecting to the specific grammar point, once you understand the specific phrases that are used in the Bunpro explanation. It’s almost too easy when you know what to look for.

As for resources, unfortunately there’s not always one that’s great, I just check YouTube and the resource links on Bunpro.
