Seeking Advice Transitioning from Genki to Quartet

Hello everyone! I’m almost done with the Genki series and plan to move on to Quartet next. Genki covers approximately half of the N4 grammar points in Bunpro, so I’m wondering if it’s recommended to finish those before starting with Quartet? From what I’ve read Quartet covers N3 and above.

Also, I have a couple of questions about which vocab lists I should study. Would it be better to go in order of JLPT levels, or should I get a head start on the vocab lists from Quartet?

One last thing—I’m considering making Bunpro my exclusive resource for vocab, I’m currently using Anki, but I’m unsure about making the switch. I’ve noticed that the vocab decks are still in beta. Is there a good reason for that? Can someone share their experience using them and would it be worth it to switch?

Thank you all very much.

Hello!

As someone who has studied both the Genki and Quartet methods I highly recommend going through all of the N5 and N4 Grammar points that are missing from Genki. As you’ve noticed, BunPro has a ton more grammar points than Genki, and the same applies to both Quartet methods.

Once finished with the N5/N4 grammar points in BunPro, then proceed to study Quartet I using the Quartet I deck found in BunPro. After that, finish N3 grammar in BunPro before moving on to Quartet II, and follow the previous pattern. By the end of that pattern, you should be completely done with N2.

For N1, you should be fine doing all of them in BunPro. The grammar points are mostly variations of the ones you’ve previously learned. They’re gonna be much easier to grasp.

In terms of vocabulary, I’ll let others chime in on that since I never studied them via Anki. I used other apps/sites for that.

HTH!

For vocab, it may make more sense to get a head start on the vocab lists from Quartet?
You could try to add a few relevant words on Bunpro manually by going on Content > Vocab Search
That way you can see if you prefer studying vocab on Bunpro vs Anki.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Personally I copy from time to time some sentences from Bunpro to Anki for a word (as I like their sentences).

I use Anki and Bunpro for vocab. I don’t mind occasionally seeing duplicate words because it helps reinforce what I’m learning. This is especially useful for me because in Bunpro I have to answer an E → J question and in Anki it is reversed.

When I studied the BP N5 and N4 vocab decks, the Genki vocab decks were marked as complete by the time I was done. Unless you need to study Quartet for a class, I think sticking with the N level decks makes the most sense.

This is the Quartet deck I’m currently using. It seems to get updated regularly and is very comprehensive.
