I recently got my exchange placement and I’m going to Sendai! I know that Sendai has a dialect but I was wondering what specifically I should study and also just general differences. Also if anyone knows what Sendai daily life is like I’d really appreciate it
Hi!

Sendai pretty much uses standard Japanese.
Kanna san summed it up pretty well, in my experience, most of the Japanese here would be standard Japanese aside from a lot of older dialect. I’m currently on the JET program and have lived in Sendai for about 2 years. Assuming we are on the same timeline, that’s what you are diong as well? If so, please feel free to ask any other questions about living here! The community in Sendai is overall very friendly, foreigners and Japanese people get along well here.
P.S. ジャス is a regional slang term for a school gym uniform. Now, it is outdated, but if you use it with an older coworker you’ll get brownie points.
What’s the general vibe of the place like? And are there any things that I should look out for?
The general vibe of Sendai is very nice! It’s a very pretty place with lots of things to do and because it’s in the middle of northern Japan there is access to a lot of interesting places. During the day it’s loud, but like most of Japan it is quiet during the nighttime. The only thing you should look out for are scams, (especially around popular drinking areas). Foreigners are can be targeted due to a low level of japanese ability and because they are isolated. It is rare, but common enough that multiple of my friends have the experience, that a religious group will invite foreigners to join a “hang out” and then they attempt to induct said people. This is overall a very unlikely problem to run into, and it can be completely avoided with a little common sense. Other than situations like this, the people are also incredibly kind! Just about local has a positive attitude towards foreigners, or they are interested to engage with them in some way.
This is definitely not a Sendai exclusive thing, I’m elsewhere in Japan and we get people that go door to door every couple months trying this
I’ve never head of them going door to door! That seems crazy. Here, it’s mostly people foreignors getting approached in public spaces by someone who speaks English, often proposing that they want to learn more English.
yeah, they straight up go door to door with pamphlets, sometimes even with an english version. every once in a while i’ll get a text from a neighbor like “the cult’s back! dont answer the door”
Was it the Mnt. Fuji cult? I’ve seen them handing out fliers at the station. One of my friends had a close run in with one.
For the original question, I haven’t been to Sendai but in 僕のいない街 [Erased] they say したっけ for bye.
Wow, Wikipedia has lots of great info 仙台弁 - Wikipedia
