I’m a beginner learner on lesson 6 of Genki I, using my Genki and Kaishi 1.5k decks to learn vocab. I learn vocab from Bunpro, graded readers, and podcasts, mostly Japanese with Shun, which centers around Genki but uses additional, common vocabulary. I relisten to these podcasts a lot, so is it worth making a deck with these words as well (including example sentences I’d like to remember)?
I think many people here will say to not worry about it just yet if you’re new to studying, and to continue listening and working on vocab to build up.
I personally love shun and teppei but do wish Shun would have his vocab at the beginning of the episode.
Regardless, If it is FUN for you to make these decks then I say go ahead (Also don’t forget to share them). A lot of people seem to get held up with the making of personalized decks, but also, if you enjoy it, and you feel as if it is helping, that is what matters.
But do realize that Shun does use a lot of simple daily japanese, so after a year of any generic 2k deck, you will begin to understand just about everything he says. So making the deck now might be a bit premature.
Id say don’t bother making decks for podcasts. You’ll get enough repeated exposure from the podcasts themselves. I think it’s a better use of time to listen to more episodes rather than make card for them. The amount of words you can listen to in 5 mins far exceeds the amount you can make/review from a deck. You’ll naturally pick up common and repeated phrases and words, if nothing else it’ll reinforce the words you’ve learned elsewhere
I didn’t start podcasts until after genki 2 and it suuuuucked until I finally stuck with it long enough to pick out words. But if you’re following shun and genki, I think you’ll be fine just using that time to listen.
