Study vs Lessons

Is any reason to create two quite similar options like study and lessons? Lessons look superior to Study, I can add my sentence, finish study only after one “grammar point” (in Study it should be at least 3), I have checkboxes for “reading material”, I can also remove “grammar point” from review or reset progress. Study option has only one advantage, it adds automatically “grammar point” to review pool. Did I miss something or this options are redundant?

Thank you for your feedback! We implemented the Study feature for people who wanted a more structured approach to learning grammar and for those that wanted to add batches of grammar points to their review queue rather than just one at a time. We realize that there are still many people that would prefer to go at their own pace, perhaps only studying one grammar point a day, so we kept the Lessons page as is. For the time being, we wanted to give you the option to set the amount of grammar points that you wish to study, study them, take a quiz and be on your way rather than adding individual items one by one. We have some features in store for Study that include specialized quizzes after each lesson that cover everything that you have learned within that particular lesson, as well as ways of gaining experience (xp) and leveling up as you progress through study. Cheers!

Since Bunpro implemented the Study mode I never studied in “Lessons” mode again because the study mode is way more convenient. On phones it is quite a struggle to find your last studied grammar point in the “lessons” screen. In study mode I just need one click and don’t need to worry about anything else. The reading topics get ticked automatically after I opened the link and after the quiz the topics are automatically added to reviews. Perfect. And for people who like a structured approach - like “5 grammar points every day” - then the study mode is also the perfect way to go.

I forgot about this feature.

Now I see also why Study can be more convenient, especially on mobile. However, I still have two suggestions:

  1. Please unify interface for Study and Lessons, I really don’t see why options which are available in Lessons, shouldn’t be also in Study (maybe except add/remove from a review)
  2. Batch mode is nice but I would appreciate if I could set it to 1. I know this option is same as in Wanikani but specifics of grammar study is a little different. Usually study grammar point is much longer than study Wanikani’s radical/kanji/vocabulary. This will allow using Study almost as Lessons but with a more structured approach and convenient way of “new study”, mentioned by @Anthropos888

Best regards, and good luck with project.

I thought I might mention how I use Bunpro in case it comes in handy as you develop the site further.

Generally, I’ll learn my grammar points from another source, say Genki. Then when I learn it through my textbook, I’ll go into Bunpro and add it to my review queue. For me the “Grammar” page is the most useful one where I have a global view. However, one thing I’d like to see is a way to filter the grammar points by their source (all points in genki 1 for example). I understand this may be a less commonly desired feature, but maybe it could be done by the community for those who are interested if an API was available.

Either way, I think Bunpro is headed in the right direction and I wanted to bounce my idea in this forum.

Cheers

@Mandos Thank you for your suggestions! We are working on unifying both the Lessons and Grammar pages to improve the way you search for grammar. We have some additional features that we will be adding to Study in the future that we hope will also bolster your experience. The reason that we chose to set the minimum number of grammar points to three, was so that when you took the quiz you would be challenged to enter the correct answer. If you were to only add one grammar point, the quiz would not serve its purpose. Perhaps there is a more intuitive way that we can do this so that you can still study one grammar point at a time and be able to take a quiz that tests your knowledge of that grammar point. We will see what we can do. Cheers!

@pcontrabass Thank you very much for providing insight on how you use Bunpro. Improving the search is near the top of our list of things to do. We aim to have the ability to create a customized search so that you can look for and study grammar points by resource, rather than just by JLPT. Once we have expanded the content of the site (adding additional Example Sentences and study questions, notes on nuance and related grammar) we will focus our attention on creating a more intuitive and intelligent search. Cheers!

Is it possible to choose grammar points for the study option or does it always pick the next “unstudied” items from the list? I really like the feature, just tested it in the last two days, but I would like to add grammar points to my reviews that I already studied with other resources for the beginning, Genki for example.
Do I have to add them to my reviews one by one or can I pick multiple points with the “study” button?

I’m a bit confused :see_no_evil::sweat_smile:

@Atani Right now, Study only allows you to pick the next “unstudied” grammar points (items that you have yet to add to your reviews) in the list. You can set the number of items you get per study session in settings (three to ten grammar points at a time), but they are in a fixed order. The reason for this is because each grammar point uses sentences that utilize previously learned material, so that you are constantly building on what you have learned.

That being said, we are working on a way for you to select multiple grammar points, in any order you choose, from the Lessons page to add to your reviews for all of the self-studiers out there that want to pick and choose when and what they study. Stay tuned. Cheers!

Thanks for your explanation :slightly_smiling_face:
