The offline experience

I’ve had a long flight from Japan and wanted (like so many) to use the time to practice Japanese.

I use a third party app for WaniKani that just straight up downloads the entire content, so I can do all my reviews and new lessons without an internet connection.

From doing reviews while on the road, I noticed, that sometimes bunpro tells me that it lost the connection to the internet and whether I want to wait, or continue offline. I also found in the settings something like “Download all data for reviews”, which presumably downloads all the example sentences and whatnot for the grammar and vocab that are currently up for review.

I did that, which I guess also means, that upcoming reviews or perhaps grammar I want to learn might not be downloaded for offline use, but fine.

But when I then tried doing the reviews offline, it took maybe 6-7 items, before there was a “error loading sentence” and I had to quit and restart the reviews to get it to show up.

So just checking in if I made a mistake, or if offline reviews aren’t really supported. Perhaps the amount of data is way larger than Wanikani, so that it’s not feasible to download all of it. But at least the downloaded reviews should’ve worked, imo.

Using the ‘download all data for reviews’ should get everything needed, so ‘error loading sentence’ is a bug. One possibility is that some new sentences were introduced since time everything has been downloaded, you might try using the button again.
Will be looking into this.

It doesn’t work for me either. I’ve tried it several times when travelling by train.
It downloads everything and then when I try to access my reviews it just tries to load everything using the awful British mobile data infrastructure and I have to wait several minutes until it can get it.

Is simply downloading all the content like the wani kani app I’m using not an option? Except for the audio perhaps, it shouldn’t take up that much memory, I’d imagine.

Wani Kani has a structured progression, so it’s easier to know what comes next, but at least downloading all reviews of the next 24h should be possible.

Yes, I also tried sevral times to download all the data before going to a train for example, but it never worked for the audio.
I was able to do all the practice, but never had the audio to hear along.

I definively would like the possibility to download all the audio of the deck I’m working on, even if it’s a few Go of data.

I would like to voice my support for a smoother offline workflow:

  • Not having to manually download the data in the settings
  • A few reviews and incoming lessons being available offline at any given time
  • Maybe download and sync in the background when using unmetered connections

I can think of a few scenarios where this is very useful. Like living in a country where data is expensive, connectivity problems (e.g. long tunnel, remote area), ability to work in airplane mode for less distraction…

Putting in my support for this as well. When you live in a third world city (Toronto :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) without any service in the subway tunnels, getting constant popups about losing connection despite pushing the button to download offline data is a real pain! :sob: really my only major complaint with the app

As someone living in a major city with lots of underground trains, I also would get a lot of use out of proper offline use. This is my only complaint, Bunpro has really brought my studying habits to another level, and being able to review smoothly during my commute would make a big difference!

Sometimes too, I will do a lot of reviews (clicking through on the popup of “review offline”) and will find to my dismay that only a portion of my reviews were logged, and I have to do many reviews again.

It would be great to smooth this issue out! Such an amazing study app, and I deeply appreciate the improvements every time :bowing_woman:t2:
