Our next stop is Shirakami-Sanchi 白神山地しらかみさんち, a wilderness area in Shirakami mountain range covered by the largest remaining beech forest, that has not been changed by human in any way. This is the remnant of the beech forests that covered northern part of Japan since eight to twelve thousands years ago. In those forests one can see Japanese black bear and Japanese macaque among others.

The area became the first UNESCO world heritage site in 1993.

The Shirakami-Sanchi is also known from its beautiful waterfalls.

To preserve the forests unchanged, the logging is banned and the tourism is limited only to the areas near the boundary. To enter the central park one must ask permission of authorities.
