Our other stop is Tashirojima (田代島), a small island on the Pacific Ocean, known as a cat island. While its population is low (around 80, mostly older people) it is famous for its large stray cat population that strives due to the Japanese belief that feeding cats grant good fortune. Due to the high cat population, there are no dogs on the island.
The island is also known as manga island because mangaka Shotaro Ishinomori (石ノ森 章太郎) wanted to relocate there.

The population of felines originates in domestic cats that were released to protect the silkworms from rodents.
