Our starting point is Shiretoko National Park, which
covers most of the Shiretoko Peninsula at the northeastern tip of the island of Hokkaidō, Japan. The word “Shiretoko” is derived from an Ainu word “sir etok”, meaning “the place where the earth protrudes”. By the way, the island is called Hokkaido because the Ainu people called this area “Kai”.
The place is known for its flora and fauna, especially as a great point for whale watching. One can spot not only orcas but also sperm whales and beaked whales from the shore!. The wildlife is not limited to just marine, there are also famous Yezo brown bears (especially loved by Ainu people, who treated them as “kamuy” gods that provided fur and meat. The Ainu people respect them so much that when they have found a bear cub, they raised it for two years with the utmost care until a ceremony “Iyomante”, during which they “send it*” back to the gods with souvenirs asking for supply of food.
One can learn quite a lot about Ainu people from the Golden Kamuy manga )
BunPro Community shuccho to Hokkaido anyone?
3717 + 7 = 3724
This is so fun! It’d be cool to add the kanji/hiragana in brackets as well for the local words.
3724+10=3734
3734+22 = 3756
