本日の文字 - Today's Character

Speaking of Wanikani, I just finished the final level yesterday evening. A relevant kanji to celebrate:

As per the above request. Sorry for the sloppy cursive versions…

This one surprised me, because you see a very clear め in both cursive styles.

I always mix up this kanji with 恐 and 怒 when I don’t pay attention. At least usually in context it’s obvious that 努 doesn’t make sense, meanwhile I often think that scary things are angry and vice-versa…

Today I discovered that the common 様 character has a bunch of variants:

When written in 草体 (sōtai, “highly-cursive”) style, [様] is called 平様 (hira-zama, literally “common form”) to distinguish from the kyūjitai form 永様 (ei-sama, literally “永[:clipboard:]-form”), and its variant forms 次様 (tsugi-zama, for 檨[:clipboard:], literally “次[:clipboard:]-form”) and 美様 (bi-zama, for 𣖙, literally “美[:clipboard:]-form”).

From 様 - Wiktionary, the free dictionary

I actually prefer these variants, I always found the merged version with a single vertical line weird to write (it messes up the stroke order of the 王 for one).

I just realized that I could decompose it as 羊 instead. お羊様, the wise sheep. I’ll try to remember it that way, it’ll make it less weird to write. Or I’ll just use one of the traditional variants to look fancy.

Now this is a character I wouldn’t mind knowing more about. I came across it in church and I was blown away by all the kun readings. I have no idea what kind of situation I would use it in, but I thought I’d give it a go.

I got a brush pen!

Even without any practice it looks pretty cool I think.

I think I totally screwed up the 草書 version of this one, but it’s a character I like to write.

For anyone confused by the 草書, the original character for 円 was 圓:

It’s one of those kyuujitai versions that I find so much nicer looking than the shinjitai. It’s easy to remember too since it’s just the common 員 kanji enclosed.

OK so I decided to do this one today because I was talking to a colleague the other day about leap years and he told me what it was in Japanese (閏年うるうどし) and I had no idea… Well, to be fair I probably learned it four years ago and forgot, but anyway, it’s a beautiful character and I also don’t do enough of 門構え.
