Today I discovered that the 旧自体 version of 払 is 拂 and frankly that feels like a huge missed opportunity for a killer mnemonic (a hand giving a dollar):
I miss this thread, it was fun. Are you still practicing, @matt_in_mito ?
I’m still doing my kanji writing drills every day. A kanji I’ve enjoyed drawing lately is 躊, found in the rather common word 躊躇:
The phonetic component is the traditional/旧字体 form of 寿.
Oh, man, I forgot about this thread! I really enjoyed learning and comparing the different forms of kanji. I was doing my own little kanji writing practice for a while, but stopped. Maybe I should start again?
@simias @Neon_Kitsune I enojyed doing it too, but honestly, taking the pictures and cropping them was so time-consuming. Also, towards the end, my comment would always be something like “This is a nice character” or “I like the shape of this one” - something basically meaningless.
I could give it another go I suppose… I’m still doing calligrahy and getting it marked by a professional teacher.
How did yall get into into writing Kanji? I do some practice with word of the days for my students. So Ill write the japanese equivelant. Sometimes Ill go in and write some kanji down for bit but I havnt found anything that makes it quite enjoyable. Suggestions? I dont wanna just be mindlessly writing down vocab.
Personally I started writing kanji to better distinguish similar characters. It was very good for that, although also very time-consuming.
It’s mostly mindless writing exercises for me though, I just enjoy it for its own sake (using nice fountain pens, nice paper etc…). If that sounds annoying I suppose a better approach would be to do some proper journaling in Japanese.
I’m too lazy to commit but I considered participating in the “Have you written your Japanese Sentence today?” thread but writing down the sentence on paper instead of just typing it.
