The given translation was “This is not something you should get so worked up over.”
Is that close to correct? My brain translates it something closer to “Are you that mad?” or “Are you mad to that extent?”

Yes, this translation is off. Yours is what I would translate it to.
EDIT: On second thought, 怒る is modifying こと in this sentence, which can be interpreted the way the BunPro team translated it, so I think their translation is correct. I might translated it as:
“Is this something to get that angry about?”
Sorry if I’m not being very helpful here.
I would translate it as “is it something to get so angry about?”, so to me the official translation is okay. There’s almost always a degree of artistic freedom when translating Japanese.
According to my gut, your translation would probably be said diffferently. For example それほど怒ってるの? Or something.
Since it is ことなの is like “it means” so its like a summary of what was already discussed and a confirmation. I think in theory “This is not something you should get so worked up over” is a loose translation. Its like a spicy version of what an exact translation might be. My personal exact translation would be “It means you’re this mad?”
pretty much both sentences could be used in the same situation.
“You at my apple!”
“It means you’re this mad?” /“This is not something you should get so worked up over”
Same meaning just drastically different phrasing haha
This is actually slightly different to the other ことなの structures, as it’s just ことですか, but carries a similar meaning. ことなの is the casual questioning form, which isn’t actually a real question for all intents and porpoises. It’s just like ‘so it’s that xxx?’ with a rising tone in English to indicate a question.
Previous answers are correct. This translation is ‘correct’, but there are certainly more literal translations possible. The reason we didn’t go with something too literal here is that the most literal translation is ‘Is it really such an angry thing?’, which kind of implies that the asker already thinks it isn’t. Really how you want to translate this depends on the tone of your internal monologue when reading it .
P.S - Intentional typo. Porpoises are cool.
That’s the thing about overloaded words like こと it’s inherently rife with interpretation especially when translating.
It’s nice to believe in platonic perfect translations, and sometimes they are possible but often they are not.
