Troubled Content and Reset Progress button

Few month ago I’ve picked up the last word from N5 Vocab deck and I decided to spend more time in WaniKani to cover the progress up to level 10 in order to get more confident in my N5 vocab / kanji knowledge and recall.

Meanwhile my BunPro learning queue seems slightly empty. I’m not too eager to pick up N4 Decks (even thought I started and I pick 2-3 items a day either way), I was thinking that it might be an opportunity to cover problematic content from N5 deck.

As you can see I have quite a few “problematic” items there.

So my question is:
People who reset progress for “troubled content” (either for a word or the whole deck), how do you approach the items you already know didn’t stick in your memory?

I was thinking about resetting progress for those, but not sure if there is another way around it or if there are some ways to make it easier for these words.

Your feedback and ideas are welcomed!

I just cram them until they are not troubled anymore.
Those who still remain as troubled after targeted effort, I give up on them, as throwing more energy on something that for some unfathomable reason doesn’t want to stay in my head, is useless imho.

Cram is potentially a good option!

I would recommend taking some time to “relearn” those points either by taking a fresh look at the content and examples or by also resetting them back to SRS 1.

When I get to the end of the deck, I also check out my troubled content.
I look to see if there’s a reason it’s so hard
Maybe the example sentence is confusing
I’m mixing it up with another word,
or maybe there’s veriation with-in the item, like conjugation.
Doing some practice outside of bunpro, check out the resource Links and then I reset them.

I use Anki for Kanji, so for similar Kanji I keep mixing up I make a card 喉 咳 → throat and cough

Yeah, I’ve decided to reset those and combine cram & fresh reviews to give those words more space with different example sentences. I think most of them represent different nuances (like there are different ways to give or take).

Yeah, I decided I will additionally take notes for those words offline on sticky notes so I could check them more often. For those, maybe, it will be just alright to rot-memorize.

Related to this, also @Noxsora and @Viki (or anyone else reading this!) if you could chime in as well:

We are exploring options for troubled content flagging and recovery that is more than just surfacing them on a profile page. Could you tell me how you usually approach resolving/fixing issues with your troubled content and what approaches you have found help the best?

I admit I do not pay that much attention to troubled content as others may. My only approach is the one I explained above. When I have time, I cram those and that’s it.

Maybe in the cram setup page on the webpage, a tile could be added for cramming troubled content (I do not recall how it looks like now, but I only remember recent mistakes or something to that end).

In the android app the cram troubled content is only available from the profile, and the cram setup seems to be the old one compared to the webpage, so this cram option could be put somewhere more prominent I think.

Somehow it feels like the FSRS system is meant to solve this kind of a problem by introducing a more flexible review timing for items that are repeatedly failed by dropping Stability and increasing words Difficulty. Even with that taking into account, I can imagine like some words just won’t get into memory even with rote memorization. For those, I think it’s better to learn those by learning kanji + sentence mining as it was mentioned before. How to decide, which item is just “hard” and which one falls into the second category is still a mystery to me.

I understand that BunPro is not a competitor for WaniKani, but maybe doing something with kanji can make words easier to recall. It helped me much with words, that consist of 2+ kanji.

For example, decomposing 生保 into two separate words (“life” and “preserve”) made it easier for me to remember the meaning and reading of it.

I’m not sure if it’s a direct way to solve the issue with “troubled content” but maybe it would encourage people to do more reviews for this kind of a content if “problematic” items will get a separate section on the dashboard, or the color, or if there will be a flag to make those items stand out similarly to “ghosts”. Ghosts feel like appearing after a repetative failure to recall a word, but in my case it’s not a problem to recall the word after 1-2-3 days, it appears only after the next review is after a week or so. New cram helps really great with the filter, but maybe it could be even better if we could filter out words on % of correct guesses or/and times that the word appeared in the reviews.

For example it might be a pretty fresh word that I’ve missed 2 of 4 times, the accuracy will be 50% which is not really good, but at the same time I can have item like such:

58% here feels better, but at the same time it’s ~23 times already I’ve missed it.
Sometimes words are becoming troublesome on Adept - Seasoned level and stay there.

I feel like the main source of my troubled content is, like already mentioned here, when a point starts pingponging between a quick srs where I’m likely to remember that I recently saw this specific point and a longer one where it starts to blend into all possible things I might consider when I look at the hint for a review.

That said, perhaps a way to use the similar content section on a grammar point to have specific practice breaking down the nuance differences would be useful for tackling troubled content like this? I know you can cram the grammar points at the same time but that’s a little less structured than what I’m imagining

I agree that implementing FSRS may decrease ghosts and troubled content items significantly, as it adapts to your learning and remembering patterns.
It seems to me that both ghosts and troubled content is trying to make up for the limitations of the set review intervals.

I use Anki, not bunpro… Sorry.
Just my experience with troubled content in Anki.

How do you feel about idea to make the items that are passing a correctness threshold after cernain level/number of re-tries to be suggested for decreased review interval?

I recall there is a general option for adjusting the interval, but maybe there could be a flag for making “shorter” reviews interval for such items? Won’t be an end-game substitute for SFRS but still an option to be slightly more flexible with those words without a need to cram those.
