Unlearned grammar in reviews for Tae Kim path

Hello,

Hoping I can get some assistance on this, as it’s killing my motivation. My current study pattern is to try and do a little bit of grammar study via Tae Kim guide each eve. Then, supplement it with BunPro throughout the day etc etc. I’ll finish a chapter or part, then go inti Bunpro Paths, tae Kim, and select the study option there.

I’m not very far through, but I keep getting grammar I don’t know show up in my reviews. Mostly て and た form related, and it’s nearly always linked with intransitive /transitive verb sentences.

Every time I do reviews I end up coming across these, which I don’t know, and it kills the session and mood.

Perhaps I have set something up incorrectly, or the Tae Kim path is unoptomised, or maybe I just need to push through past te/ta form, but right now I just don’t bother doing my reviews as it’s a time sink on stuff I don’t know.

Any ideas what I have done wrong/can do to remedy?

Not sure about the optimization or not of the Tae Kim path, I imagine that since a lot of the reorganization it may not be laid out as nicely as the other paths.

As far as ~て ~た forms, you have to learn it one way or another.
This is the best primer on the internet for it:

It’s nothing you’ve done, if that eases any of your concerns haha. To summarize quickly, Bunpro is built around the ‘Bunpro Path’ where you start from zero and you are never tested/shown anything in example sentences (pertaining to grammar) that you hadn’t previously studied on said path. While this works for our own path, there are bound to be some hiccups when users use other paths because different resources introduce different grammar at different times.

The team has done a great job to move a lot of stuff around, re-write pre-existing content to help soften the blow as much as possible, but it’s only natural that there will be some issues like you present. For what it’s worth - I initially started on the Tae Kim path as well but after running into the same exact issue as you, I switched to the Bunpro path and honestly never looked back. I think Tae Kim’s strength lies in the explanations, not necessarily the order in which stuff is presented. At least, that’s what I remember thinking long ago. The good thing about the Bunpro path is that I could still use Tae Kim as a study-along, I was just learning some of the fundamentals in a different order.

People can chime in with their own experiences, but I found that these discrepancies were only an issue in N5. There’s a little bit in N4 as well, but for the most part it’s just N5 because that’s where the huge foundational stuff lies like て、た、など stuff is. I’m also a massive, massive fan of the video @Sidgr posted (beat me to the punch!). After absorbing that content as much as possible, I think it’ll help out a ton with a lot of your frustrations. If you have any more questions or whatever else please feel free to chuck 'em our way, always happy to talk about stuff as it gives the team more things to be aware of when adjusting content in the future~

Thanks both, I will give that video a watch soon.

It makes sense about the path and why the design choices have been made that way, I just wasn’t aware.

I will adapt my approach to match it - I think I just need to blur through as much N5 grammar as fast as possible so I’m at least somewhat aware of it, then refine afterwards
