Unnecessary Vocab

So I’m almost done with N5 vocabulary and there are quite some words that make absolutely no sense to be in N5. and on other sites/dictionaries they are labelled as sometimes even N1. for example sanfujinka (gynaecology department) … that’s really specific and I don’t think I will need that anytime soon.
also a lot of times it even says under frequency for example general top 16000 … wouldn’t it be way more helpful to learn the top 2000 vocab in N5 etc …
I’m really getting annoyed by that.

also what happens if I remove an item from reviews but maybe when I’m through with everything else I want to learn them anyway? is there a way to easily get all the vocab I removed from the reviews back and learn them?

If your goal is to take the JLPT, then focus on listening and add words only as you encounter them.

If your goal is to learn Japanese, then don’t worry about JLPT classifications.

If you think a word is not necessary (telegram for instance - 電報) it probably is used more than you think.

If you want to stop reviews for a word, you can always add it back in later. The option is on each individual word’s settings.

Yeah… that means one at a time. There’s no bulk-update option other than complete removal.

Some of the kinda obscure vocab in the N5 deck is from Genki I. The medical vocab terms in question is from the extra vocab section in Lesson 12. No, it doesn’t really make sense that those words are in the N5 deck but it makes more sense when you know it comes from a beginner textbook which generally doesn’t follow the N-levels.

I agree that words like 産婦人科 and 抗生物質 probably don’t don’t belong in the N5 deck, but they are common words that should be learned.

I assumed that this topic would be about something else based in the title (words that are unnecessary to learn at all). Which words are unnecessary is always a fun topic. For example I was having a conversation with a friend a long while back about that very same topic and he gave the example that “you will never need to know the word for telephone pole” and I thought that was really funny because earlier that same day I was reading and came across 電柱 so the statement that you would never see it in the wild was funny to me. Which words are “unnecessary” really comes down to context as well as the avenues you’re using the language in daily life. If you’re studying for the JLPT than those words are probably unnecessary even in N1, but if you’re learning Japanese than they could be useful to know at any level.

Maybe those words don’t belong in N5, but those two words specifically would be helpful to know and memorizing an extra word or two only takes a minute. Maybe you’re a single guy and won’t get any use out of 産婦人科, but you might get some use out of 抗生物質 when your pharmacist gives you instructions about your medicine.
