Use of の

I’m trying to figure out how to title some of my Anki decks.

I want one titled Japanese Sentences and the other titled Japanese Sentences Audio

I think they would be:

日本語文
日本語文の音声

I wasn’t sure if there should be a の between ‘Japanese’ and ‘sentence’ as well, but doing a google search of two, I think these are correct.

I have real issues trying to figure out when and when not to add の between words that go together…

Well as titles it can be an aesthetic choice to omit the の. Though its generally required grammatically.

I’ve struggled with this, too. For instance, I just came across the word 生命維持装置 (life-support system). 生命、維持 and 装置 are all words in their own right. Naively, you’d think it would be 生命の維持の装置, and I suppose it would be, except that probably gets cumbersome to say and quickly ended up being compounded together. I imagine most compounds arise that way.

How do you know when a given phrase is common enough that it’s OK to omit the の’s? My guess is only familiarity with the language will answer that. I don’t know of any general rules that say, “You can always omit の when…” My approach has always been to use の unless I’ve seen it used without before.
