る → り verb nominalization?

While studying vocab today I came across this “verb nominalization”

Is this just some weird linguistic quirk, or is this an actual grammar point?
Didn’t really know how to google search this :disappointed_relieved:

Changing a verb to its stem makes it a noun. But keep in mind that doing this for any given verb won’t necessarily be natural. Just because it’s grammatically correct doesn’t mean it’s common to do this for every verb.
