Vocab marked as mastered straight after learning?

Hi,

I’ve started using Bunpro for grammar and vocab. Initially, because I had some knowledge of N5 and N4 vocabulary and grammar, I went through the Bunpro JLPT decks and mass marked every lesson as mastered, making sure to click the ‘remove from reviews’ on the actual individual words I did not know.
After this process was over, I finally added the JLPT grammar N5 and JLPT vocab N5 decks to my learn queue. However, when I went to learn some grammar and vocab from the learn queue today, the grammar that I learned had a review forecast of 3 hours later, but my vocab review forecast was nonexistent. When I checked my vocab progress, I had no items in the beginner stage, only on the mastered stage.

(TL;DR) I guess my question is, did I do something wrong? How can I make it so that the vocabs I learn from the learn queue aren’t going straight to mastered and go to beginner instead, following the natural SRS pace?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, I go to mark things as mastered too. But I noticed that after I learn it and go to my decks, the more I practiced the stuff, the redder the SRS stamp gets. So I guess what I’m saying is take it out of mastered, add it to reviews, and practice it for a while before marking it as mastered to see what happens.

Thanks for the quick reply! I think the problem is that, after I take it out of mastered, I add it to reviews, but after the initial review, the SRS stamp jumps up to mastered, for a reason I don’t understand. I’m not actually marking it as mastered, I’m just trying to follow the learn quiz.
I included some pictures to show what I mean. The last picture is of the initial review. On the upper right corner, it says ‘Master’, which I take it to mean that the level of the review is master level. However, it should say ‘beginner’, instead

Np! Um I’ve never dealt with something like this. How many times did you review it and get the answer right? If only once, I believe it may be a technical issue and suggest you talk to @Jake, @mrnoone, or @bunnypro. They usually know a lot. :purple_heart: :purple_heart: :purple_heart: :purple_heart:

If it’s totally new vocab to you and it goes straight to “Master” after just one review, then it definitely sounds like a bug!
I’ll ping @veritas_nz, Bunpro’s expert bug catcher.

@MOA_304 @bunnypro I appreciate that, guys! Yes, the vocab is new and it is after just one review that it happens

You mass marked everything as mastered? Are these the same decks giving you trouble? When you mark something mastered, it stayed that way. Items keep their srs levels and progress even after you remove them from reviews. What you wanted to do was “reset progress” on any items you did not know. That’ll set it back to beginner, so when it’s introduced in learn again you can actually learn it

Another thing that could be it, in your deck settings make sure it does not say the default srs is master

Welcome to the community :tada:

Yes, I actually mass marked everything as mastered and these are the same decks. However, when I went to go search for the ‘reset progress’ button I could not find it. All I could find was ‘add to reviews’ and ‘mark as mastered’.

However, I do remember seeing that ‘reset progress’ button somewhere, but can’t find it now. I tried clicking each vocab’s individual page, but couldn’t find it there

I can confirm that the default SRS is not set to master.

I tried just clicking the ‘add to review’ on the vocab I removed from mastered, and it seems to work, meaning, it makes the review beginner level. Now I’m just wondering if that’s how I have to approach it from now on, rather than using the learn button from the dashboard

For the professional bug catchers, it may also be useful just to confirm if the grammar items (which you’ve followed this same process for) definitely show “Beginner 1” after the first time you review them. (This would appear, for example, in the same place as where it says “Master” after the first time you review the vocab items).
It seems suspicious that there is a difference between the way your grammar and vocab items are behaving! :male_detective:

Yes, I can confirm that grammar items are behaving normally, as in, they’re showing just the ‘beginner 1’ stage when I first review them. But now that you mention it, I do not remember mass marking the grammar items like I did in the vocab decks. I went 1 by 1 with the grammar decks. I think it might be what @IcyIceBear was saying

Ah, then that makes sense and sounds right!

While it may take some time to do for each item, here is a way to reset your progress for individual vocab items:
On each vocab item’s page, it should be possible to access something looking like the following, probably on the right of the page or by opening a “sidebar”:

In this image, there is a “settings” wheel to go to, then a “Reset Progress” option.
Hopefully something similar will be available on your device/browser :+1:

I’ve known most of that N5 grammar for over half my life and I still went through it normally. The way Bunpro’s material builds on itself, I found that the best way to make sure that the new stuff organically builds from what I know. Plus starting easy got me used to the site’s structure.

Found it! I successfully tested it and it seems to be working well. Thanks a lot for your help, everyone @bunnypro @MOA_304 @IcyIceBear @Brand_S

Can I be so selfish as to ask for someone to plz give me the TLDR version of what happened in this thread? My brain is currently fried ATM from too much (or not enough ) coffee

Is it the “Marked as Master-ed and then Remove from Reviews-ed without Reset Progress-ing first” thing again?
If so then yeah, I agree it’s hella confusing. I’ve brought it up with the team before, but the convo didn’t get anywhere. Might be worth a bump internally.

Exactly this (´;ω;`)

Yep, that seems like a fair summary!

@IcyIceBear @bunnypro

UX question – without any previous context – would you think that removing from Reviews would also reset the Review at the same time?

Personally, yes!
Then when re-adding something to Reviews, at that stage you could sort out what SRS level to put it as
But I would be interested to know others’ thoughts on it too.

Im not sure, I feel biased from knowing how bunpro works  to me it only means remove from reviews, not progress.

But trying to be objective, I can see how that could mean the same thing to people. Would there be an instance where someone removes an item from reviews, expecting to come back to it at some point and wanting to be at the previous srs level? I kinda agree with bunny here. when they encounter it again they can set the srs to what they want

unless someone would want to keep track of progress without having it in reviews? cant think of why tho. EDIT except in the case of decks now, i can see wanting to remove or suspend an entire deck at a time to focus on other decks and not get harrased with reviews. in this case, I would definitely want it to only remove from reviews, not reset progress

Yeah the bias is real…
I kinda think most users would expect it to be reset too…
Apparently so too did @Inamari!

The use cases for anti-Reset you mentioned feel super niche, which is why I’ve always been pro-Reset.

Keen to hear if any others have opinions too!
