ある/いる vs です [SOLVED]

Okay, this is driving me a little bit batty. When I’m doing reviews, and get something like “紙___。”, how do I figure out if the app wants me to answer がある or だ (or があります or です if it asks for polite)? I haven’t been able to spot a difference in how it’s worded in the question, and so far as I know they’re both valid answers, but it’s early enough in the program I figure near everyone has hit this, so there must be something I’m missing…

I can’t say much as I don’t know the context or anything like that but it should tell you what it wants (polite or not) where the text is.

All the English translations for ある have “there is” highlighted.
All the English translations for です have “is” highlighted.

Are you trying to guess without the English?
Do you know about pressing spacebar to reveal the hints and translations?

I have the English on (set to “hint”, tapping for more if needed), but I think I failed to notice that pattern in the inclusion of “there”. ありがとうございます~!
