じたい vs じょうきょう

Hi, obligatory “first time creating a topic, apologies if mistakes are made” disclaimer.

I’ve been working my way through the N3 vocab deck, and one mistake I’m repeatedly making is when to use じたい or じょうきょう as they are often translated as just ‘situation’ in English. I know they have different meanings and nuance, but I’m struggling at picking up the differences and when to use each. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey @genpoe ! Welcome to the forums!

事態 is used to talk about a specific event or incident that is taking place. This one is used when a problem arises or to indicate that a situation is changing.

状況 is used to talk about a specific circumstance or a situation. This one is used to indicate the current state of a situation.

I hope this clears it up!
