I noticed that during reviews, in cases where multiple similar words fit, Bunpro usually suggests trying another word when you answer with a synonym. Still, when I answered ばん for the 秋の____は、他と比べ物にならない程綺麗だ (Autumn evenings are incomparably beautiful) it marked it as incorrect without suggesting to try a different word first. Does it mean that there is a big difference between those two, which makes using ばん in this sentence completely incorrect?

purely from what I picked up from immersion, 晩 is the standard word to refer to the time frame of “an evening” in every-day speech. 夕べ is mostly used for “last night”/“yesterday evening” in normal conversations or in a more poetic vibe (such as talking about the general concept of autumn evenings)

I think the the accepted synonyms have to be added manually by the bunpro team and there are a lot of places where multiple words might stand in for another.
Here’s the two entries from the 新明解8 dictionary. 夕べ seems to be more poetic. They’re both listed as synonyms for each other.
