Is 太った actually incorrect, or just unexpected for this question? I already think of 太る as “to become fat”.
Wouldn’t 太った be a single event (“got fat”)? If so I don’t think it really makes sense with どんどん.
Yeah, maybe I’m thinking more of 太くなった. I should see if that’s accepted next time (though the hint does say 太る and not 太い so perhaps that’s what should tip me off).
Using 'から’ puts this into a continuous past sequence with ‘Since’ which will need ってきた:
Past<----------> Now
From the past up until this point, ‘I have become fatter’(and continue to be fat). The ‘since’ and ‘have’ change this to a present condition. Otherwise 太った give the impression of ‘was fat’ or ‘became fat’ in the past but nothing about now. I checked with a native on this and they felt this nuance would get lost using 太った alone.
