In my initial go at Japanese, I think I went too fast and ended up regretting it.
So this second go-at-it I’m going at half the speed and I’m enjoying it more and I think is sticking better (could be bias since I have a bit more experience?).
But now I do half of what I did before in learning new vocabulary and grammar points and instead practice writing to make sure I understood things. I also do a tiny bit of listening practice, though this one is a struggle for sure.
This has done a few things for me:
- More difficult grammar points have become engrained and now second nature.
- New points become easier because I can read easier.
So if you’re not 100A% in a hurry (for example you need it for a job), then I would slow down and spend a bit more time re-enforcing what you learn by actually using it.
If you’re in WaniKani level 3-4 you have a few basic vocabulary words you can use for that. If not I would focus on useful words: some common verbs and their negatives versions, days of the week, she/me/I/we/him/her, things like who/what/that/this
And a few places, convenience store, restaurant, party, park, mountain, river, ocean and objects, train, car, house, etc, then basic particles no, de, ka, to, ga etc…
Once I did that it was so much fun challenging myself to build more and more complex sentences.
Having said all that, I think you need to do what works best for you and your lifestyle. Sometime I have such busy weeks it is easiest to just do vocabulary and move on…
Would love to hear more about your experience in reading, writing and listening and where you stand vocabulary wise.
