What does the circled number behind grammar lesson titles mean?

For example, on the following page:

The title is “-te iru”, and then it has a number 2 in a circle behind it. I’ve seen this a few times now, mostly with a circled number 1, and I think only for verbs.

What does the number mean? Is there some documentation available?

Hey, as for grammar, it means there are other uses for grammar, that are quite different so the grammar was split into parts, to make it easier to understand and remember.

You will also find ている① and ている③

Cheers

Ah, so like a section or part number! Got it, thank you very much!

Because you said “as for grammar”: Do the circles exist for vocabulary too and have a different meaning?

I’ve personally not seen them on vocabulary before. Japanese is absolutely full of synonyms and homophones though for sure.
