What is going on here?

After the latest update this is what my vocabulary progress graph looks like:

I’ve imported my Wanikani progress (level 40) and maybe studied 10 or so items from a vocab deck in the past. I can’t make sense of the numbers to the right of each bar, what are they describing?

I believe that’s how many words is in each category, so you know 620 out of 1100 potential N5 words, and 417 out of 1100 additional N4 words, etc. For instance, N4 words wouldn’t appear on an N5 test if you took one, but if you took the N4 you’d need to know the N5 AND the N4 words. There are a lot of words you won’t learn on WaniKani that will fall into those categories. WaniKani only teaches you ~6000 and as you can see there are ~9000 in that list.

Also note that, in the same way that Bunpro has a lot of vocab not covered by Wanikani, there are also many words on Wanikani that are not covered by the Bunpro N5-N1 decks. These do end up getting imported to Bunpro and appear with a special designation (like E1 and A9 - not sure what they mean).

Just to add to this response… it’s been explained before that the additional vocab follow after the N-level system and lower numbers are supposed to be more common.

These wouldn’t contribute to the numbers on OP’s progress graphs though. These are genuinely just all the words you should know as per the WK import.

AAAAH it didn’t even cross my mind for a second that the final digit was getting pushed to the next line, I was seeing the single digit as a different field. Thanks so much for the information pals!

Oh, that’s too funny. I was honestly confused by your confusion. I’m glad you figured it out!
