Not sure if there is any info on it to find, but it means that it’s formal.

Really? Hmmm. I don’t understand then. Is it formal as in formal speech or formal is in OLD and NOT USED anymore?

It can also mean it’s used more in written language (which often goes hand in hand with formal). It definitely doesn’t mean it’s unused. 連用形 is marked with the 硬 and it was used extensively in 魔女の宅急便 (and I’m told is common in writing in general).
