What's a good Bunpro pace when I accidentally reset everything?

Hey all, I was trying to reset my progress on N3 and accidentally reset all of my reviews on this account (truly brilliant). I’d gotten about halfway through the N3 grammar points in terms of progress, but took a break from Japanese for like five months to study for the GRE when the JLPT got cancelled.

I think I’m okay with this, but I guess my situation is: I want to take N2 in December. I don’t remember a ton of the grammar from N3, so I want to study all that as well.

With the deadline of December 1st 2022, what’s a decent plan for getting through the N3/N2 grammar points that won’t overwhelm me? I did the math and it came out to studying about 2-3 grammar points a day, but I’d also like to pepper in some of the N4 grammar points for review.

Any other tips for grammar study would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’ve only done half of N2 (took a hard break after 450ish days of adding 10 a week) but to be honest, some of N2 points really aren’t terribly challenging. I’m sure my grasping of all the nuances isn’t the best, but I struggled a lot more with N3 in comparison.

I would do a quick glance through the N3 and if you remember a little bit about any of the points, add it to the queue. To avoid too much too soon, spread this out over 2 or 3 days if there’s a lot. For the rest, your pace is going to have to be a little faster than normal. Again, purely personal opinion, but I would spend more time on N3 than 2. One suggestion would be to do 2 points every week day and then 1 on the weekend. You may be able to omit some points that aren’t officially on the tests, but I’d avoid that for obvious reasons. You’ll want to have a bit of a buffer for when you finish it all and want to use cram before the test, read the writeups that will come out for N3 and N2, do practice tests, etc. For N2 you could probably just do 2 every day. Of course, depending on retention and free time you could ramp this up, it’s not set in stone.

For N4 you could add the points now all at once; your short term review count is going to SUCK, but that’s probably a trade off you’ll be happy with if it means you finish in the end. Along the way you’re going to find some points that are genuinely quite simple, all things considered, so you could even ramp up the grammar count that day by 1 or 2. Not advised for tougher stuff, but after combing through the points you should be able to see what I mean.

Any other specific questions feel free to ask away!

To leave time for the harder-to-remember stuff, I’d add the easy stuff at 5-6 points per day, which might take more time but it should be easy or review for you. Then add the harder stuff at 2-3 points per day.
Another idea, you might switch days – eg. one day add N2 grammar, one day add N4 grammar – so that you don’t overload your brain all at once.
Also, I found it sometimes useful to pick your own grammar points (instead of taking the next 5 random points) based on things that look familiar or interesting to you.

Cant the Bunpro team help in this case? Maybe a database backup from some weeks ago for your user?

The best pace is the one you are comfortable with. I reset all my progress last year and re-did all of N5 and N4. I sometimes did 5-10 grammar points a day until I was back up to speed going in sequential order. Was it worth resetting? IMO, no. But there is some merit from restarting, you may recognize some grammar or even new words in a light you haven’t before. Yes, it sucks now, but try to look for opportunities where you can learn from it.

Fortunately, the N5 and N4 stuff will be a breeze, just be prepared for 100 reviews a day waiting for you from adding all those grammar points. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you might got your math wrong. (edit: unless you want to restudy all N5 and N4 points too)
N3 has 219 grammar points
N2 has 210 grammar points
Which is a total of 429 grammar points spread out over 305 days which is 1,4 grammar points per day or roughly 10 grammar points per week. Of course you may want to do a little bit more, so you can focus on refreshing what you learned before the test.

I am not at your level yet (near the end of N4 Here), but this is roughly my progression speed right now, so I can say it is sustainable. And I am confident you will do just fine.
I hope that little math did give you some relieve ^^

I don’t think it’s viable to mess with the database / backups because one accidentally reset. So many things can go wrong with a partial restoration.

Also it’s clearly stated that it can not be undone, so it might not be even technically possible.

DANGER!

Review Reset, Recalculating Streak & Account Deletion are permanent actions and cannot be undone. Proceed with caution.

As for the question in the opening topic, if it were me, I might go grammar point per grammar point and mark as “I know this” for the points I’m certainly have mastered, then after that find a path it works properly for you that you don’t get overwhelmed with reviews.

Yeah, I did this without fully understanding what I was doing and will live with the consequences of my own actions lol. I don’t really mind redoing a lot of the grammar, which is my weakest area in Japanese, anyway, just wanted to figure out what a decent pace for it was in my own silly situation.

I super did get my math wrong, thank you!

Yeah, I’m honestly worried more about the N3 grammar points which is why I wanted to take a leisurely approach and start them over. I appreciate all your advice though! I’d gone through some of the N2 grammar points that I already know and they didn’t seem tooooo much more difficult, just more situational specific.

Yeah your description is exactly what I felt - much more context specific, but not really difficulty per se. N3 just has so many similar types of items and ways of saying things, I always get a slight laugh when I have N2 items at higher srs levels but I’ve got some N3 things stuck in ghost hell 4ever.

Anyways, sounds like you’re on the right path! Best of luck with your busy year ahead!
