What's included in offline mode?

Hello, could someone please give me an overview of what is and isn’t possible in offline mode? I will soon be in a lot of situations where I won’t have internet for a day, but will also have a lot of time to study. My question is specifically about the android app.

More specific questions:

  1. I just tried doing a review in airplane mode without downloading anything beforehand, and it worked fine. What would have been different had I clicked “Get offline data” before that?
  2. The “Get offline button” explanation describes that it’s specifically for FINISHING reviews in capslock, but that’s confusing to me because… What else could I possibly want to do with the reviews except finishing them? So the developer probably meant something different from what I’m understanding here.
  3. Does the app handle items that are already learned and staged to enter the review queue at a future time point that is after going offline? So what I mean is items that are post-lesson, but pre-review.

I’d also be interested to hear if someone in a similar situation has tips and tricks for handling offline studying that are not covered by these questions.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hey @bennihongo !

“Get offline data” downloads more example sentences. The app usually stores only the sentences it needs, so if you’re on a plane and open a grammar point or vocabulary item you haven’t seen before, its example sentences might not be available.

What we meant is that you can complete reviews for items already scheduled, but you can’t add new items to your reviews while offline. The wording could definitely be better!

Yes! Items already scheduled will appear in the queue when they become due, even if you’re offline. For example:

  • 09:00: You complete a lesson. The item’s first review is scheduled for 13:00.
  • 10:00: You go offline for the rest of the day (flying to Japan, of course!).
  • 13:00: The item appears in your review queue.

You can do quite a few things offline:

  • Start and finish a JLPT test. Use the download button beforehand to download the audio files and images; otherwise, only text questions will be available. Your results will sync the next time you have an internet connection.
  • Browse grammar and vocabulary.
  • Complete reviews for items already scheduled.
  • Read reading passages.
  • Play Gokana and learn kana.

Cheers!
