By the way, is it just me or this community design super similar to WK?
I can’t speak on other grammar resources, but the design similarity is probably because they’re both using the Discourse platform as a baseline.
Do you think Bunpro’s grammar on its own is good enough to get me through all I need? I very like its style but I’ve heard that it should be used as something you do after following a guide like Tae Kim or Sakubi
I think Bunpro does a great job of the grammar explanations, personally I like to use a few resources, I stared with Genki 1&2 then moved onto Quartet 1&2, I followed along with ToKini Andy on youtube to supplement these books, he does a great series explaining all the grammar points from Genki and Quartet, I think they have some good explanations and grammar drills, they are a little expensive and the conversation drills aren’t great for learning on your own, but may be worth looking into if you like to work out of a textbook. Japanese from Zero is also another good option its a lot more slow paced but great for self study and has a good series on youtube to help with each lesson.
Also I use Satori Reader for my reading practice, it lets you customise your kanji knowledge and categorises the series into difficulty, it has a nice variety of stories, fact and fiction, they also offer some of the stories for free so worth checking out to see if you like it, great for building your confidence of the grammar you have learned and gives you a good feeling of progress as you move through the difficulties.
If you have a Netflix account also use that for some listening practice, there are loads of Japanese programs on there and you can put the subtitles in your own language if you need translations of parts or use the Japanese subtitles if they help.
Hope this helps a bit
I’d say it depends on your learning style. I love the no fluff straight to the point of explanation +examples. If you’re a visual learner try yt videos along with bunpro, I can’t recommend any because it’s def not my style.
Gripe about tobira
I was using bunpro along with tobira but my learning took a hit because of burn out with the textbook. Started becoming a hassle for me to actually sit down and just look at this book🤷‍♂️ took me 5 chapters in to realize it’s grammar explanations were really just bare minimum (like one or 2 sentences about it) which was fine I got the most basic point, but it always left me wanting more…it was basically just a list I used to go through the dictionaries of Japanese grammar.
So currently I’m only using bunpro by itself and it’s so much easier. I can open my phone and get through 5 points in like 20 mins and call it a day until reviews come and test how well I actually read through it. I bookmark the grammar that doesn’t make sense to me and plan to reference the dictionaries on them. But out of like the lastest 100 grammar points, it’s only around maybe 7? With tobira it was literally every. Single. One. And the reason I just can’t understand some grammar points is just user error. That and I’m still using the tobira path so the points don’t build on each other as well as the bunpro path but I’ll be done with it soon. I’ve gone through more of the textbook this last month alone than the entire 2 years I’ve had it, by not using it lmao
Anyway, TLDR don’t learn grammar from tobira (it is a good textbook overall tho). I think bunpro does an amazing job all on its own, but if you need a point of reference I highly recommend the dictionaries of Japanese grammar. I’ve never needed another source after reading it’s entry for a grammar point because it answers all my questions thoroughly
