Why don't user synonyms work?

On WaniKani, you can add user synonyms which are then accepted as correct answers when you type them in. With Bunpro, however, you can type in your own synonym but it still isn’t accepted as a correct answer. It drives me nuts.

For example, the Bunpro translation of 飴細工 is “candy fashioned in human and animal forms”, which takes way too long to type out when I’m trying to breeze through my reviews. I want to add “sugar sculpture” as an answer (which also appears on Jisho) so that I don’t have to waste my time typing out a needlessly long definition.

Another example is 駆け出す, which is a verb, so you might expect the answer to be “to bolt”, but Bunpro only accepts “bolt”. Again, very annoying.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to have user synonyms be accepted as correct answers?

Thanks.

you sometimes have to start the review session again for the new user synonym to apply if you added the synonym mid session

Oh ok, thank you! I’ll see if that works.

@cafelatte

It’s meant to update the synonym and allow you to re-enter it right after adding it, even during Reviews.

Turns out this was bugged.
Will push a fix for it today.
No need to restart Reviews next time.

Thank you, it works! That makes doing reviews so much better.

Oh and also, if you think it’s worth adding, you can always use the Bug button in the bottom right of the Reviews screen to add a synonym to the official Vocab, which will help all users!

Sort of related bug, but adding user synonyms on iPhone behaves weirdly. If the synonym starts with a capital letter, when you save it the first letter just disappears entirely :stuck_out_tongue:
