オナラ - why no card yet?

オナラ - why no card yet? I search and zero results. Why? It’s the greatest Japanese word :frowning:

I agree! lol

I was surprised that this wasn’t in the database so I tried searching for “fart” in Bunpro’s search. There’s some good ones in there :joy:

But actually, I found it here:

It’s one of the two readings associated with the word.

This thread reminds me of one of my favourite Japanese phrases: (イタチの)最後っ屁…

This has totally gotta be a mistake I think. Although there is the kanji for おなら (which is amazing by the way that there is a unique kanji for fart), I have never actually heard someone use the reading of へ. I will have to double check this one to make sure that it shouldn’t be オナラ.

I have a mined card from the sentence 屁でも無い (へでもねえ, written with 屁 kanji) from Rurouni Kenshin subtitles.

「屁」の意味や使い方 わかりやすく解説 Weblio辞書

I’m not sure how common that reading is, but it does appear to exist according to Jisho, Weblio, and Goo. I have seen it only connected to other kanji as 屁理屈 (へりくつ).

On a different note, I remember (and just double-checked it) that WaniKani says that
Note that some dictionaries incorrectly list おなら as a reading for this kanji [the 屁 kanji]. While おなら also means "flatulence" (as in "fart"), you’ll only ever encounter this reading in hiragana, as the kanji can only be read as へ.
I’m not sure how correct this statement is, but it may be something worth investigating as well.

This is it, right?

Or is this something different from a card? I don’t actually know what card means in Bunpro context.

Also due to this thread TIL:

I think the Bunpro team may have just added that. Or the one I linked above is now a 404 link, and the word you linked wasn’t originally showing up in search a few days ago.

Either way, yay we now have a listing for おなら :joy:

I looked up 屁 in the 6th edition of 漢字源. The only readings there are ヒ and へ.

おなら is there, but only as a definition, not a reading.

The entry was supposed to be おなら, but 屁 was used by mistake. So, we fixed it. Sorry to everyone who wanted to practice this word :bowing_woman:

(P.S. It seems that おなら comes from お鳴らし, a word created by women serving emperors or nobility in medieval Japan as a more roundabout or refined(?) version of 屁 :joy:)

I can’t believe a thread on farts has become so active :joy::joy:

Fun fact: おなら was actually one of the first Japanese words I learned because my host sister was obsessed with のだめカンタービレ and often played this song
