10/16 Major Update - Grammar/Vocab Page 3.0

Overall a fan of the update (especially now that the example sentences have been moved to the left side of the page).

One thing I did notice though that I’m not loving is the new “See More” option that hides some of the example sentences. I can understand this being useful (especially in terms of loading content quickly) if there are dozens of example sentences. However, currently on vocab pages six example sentences are shown, with only two being hidden under the see more option. I personally always read every example sentence, regardless of the JLPT level, so having to hit “See More” for every vocab word I learn is a bit of a pain.

If the idea is to add a lot more example sentences in the future, I can see the argument for keeping that functionality, but would it be possible to have a user setting that allows pages to show all content as a default? Having a setting like that would save me hundreds (if not thousands) of extra clicks over my lifetime usage of Bunpro. Thanks! :relaxed:

You’re right about that. I guess I meant that if not that many people actually use the notes section, maybe there’s no need to devote a lot of time to changing it?

I mean they don’t need a poll to know who is using notes, they have access to the raw data.

I stand corrected!

Still can’t replicate this…
You don’t have any scripts running or anything like that?
I tried with Lightning/Focus mode, Autoplay audio on/off, Auto-show Info on/off etc. but couldn’t get it to trigger

I agree with this! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
At first, I thought, where have half of the example sentences gone?
Now I see you have to click a button to see the other half of the example sentences every time.
I’m thinking, you guys have created all this great stuff, so why hide it? :rofl:

I wish stuff like the synonyms (which I refer to and add/amend frequently) could be moved to the top of the page and the example sentences be moved to the bottom of the page (for these, I’ve only usually once gone/thought through thoroughly though).

Yeah, that could be it, actually. I can’t test it for a while, my laptop is undergoing repairs. @rdennison7, you mentioned experiencing the same issue – do you use scripts too?

Btw, currently using a different laptop with no scripts and I haven’t encountered the auto-scroll.

Just about the auto-scroll, this has happened to me sometimes when creating synonyms, especially when starting to create synonyms and then being swiftly whisked to a totally different part of the page, and also when pressing “space” when entering a new synonym (in general, there seem to be some weird behaviors after some letters pressed when entering synonyms).

@bunnypro

Yeah can’t replicate either of these :sob:
Synonyms is the bane of my existence so I don’t doubt there would be an auto-scrolling issue with it.

If you’re able to reproduce the issues consistently, please let me know the steps you’re doing to replicate it and I’ll go down the bunny-hole!

Fortunately/unfortunately, these issues don’t happen every time.
However, I’ve noticed that on a computer, it’s all smooth, but there are issues when accessing on a phone.
As far as I can see, part of the problem might be checking for whether the synonym being entered is a duplicate after every letter typed plus the phone also doing its “predictive text” thing after every letter typed. It seems to mean that e.g. when typing quickly, some of the letters don’t make it through to the screen and sometimes the letter typed acts as a hotkey instead of being input onto the screen as part of the synonym.
That’s my 2¢ anyway!

Hello again!

I come back with this suggestion, which I truly believe can enhance the study both of grammar and vocabulary. Though I reckon it may take quite an amount of work, I would offer myself to spot the interrelated grammar-vocab pairs.

Thank you again for considering this proposal. 良い一日を

We can definitely do this! I will make a point of adding them all in the information section of the related vocab as soon as possible :bowing_man:

Thank you so much indeed!

As I said, pray let me know how can I be of service to carry this through. As a start, here are the ones I’ve gathered since I first came up with this suggestion:

  • N4 Conjunction すると and N3 lesson 1: 18/22
  • N4 Interjection そうだ and N3 lesson 1: 17/22
  • N4 Expression その為 and N3 lesson 3: 21/22
  • N4 Pre-noun Adjectival そんな and N4 lesson 5: 4/20
  • N4 Expression その頃 and N4 lesson 2: 8/17
  • N4 Conjuction それで and N4 lesson 10: 11/18

User CSS for other grumpy old people who don’t like sticky stuff following them around :older_man:൬゛

header.fixed,
header.sticky,
aside.sticky{
	position: initial;
}

#floating-portal-header{
	display: none;
}

#examples header div.pointer-events-none{
	opacity: 0;
}

So far the Details/Examples/Resources buttons lead to the right places. Hopefully it doesn’t break anything, will update if I find out.

Now, for the truly hardcore grumps, you can also lose the entire sidebar (and its functionality), and all floating buttons with this:

#floating-portal-footer,
aside.sticky{
	display: none;
}

And hit F11 for a peaceful scroll, removed from the distractions of modern life

(You can look up your browser’s “switch tab” shortcut to swap seamlessly to those jisho/deepl/gtranslate tabs you’re probably also using)

Cheers!

When this was first updated, while I was adding new grammar, it would show only 6 example sentence and then I had to expand if I wanted more.
Lately the examples are already expanded as defulat. I preferred how it was originally, I would normally only read 6 examples before adding the grammar to reviews.

Is there a way to have it remain hidden like it was with the update?

Hi!

I come back to this suggestion, as I’ve found some more instances that I would like to add to my previous list:

  • N4 Conjunction すると and N3 lesson 1: 18/22
  • N4 Interjection そうだ and N3 lesson 1: 17/22
  • N4 Expression その為 and N3 lesson 3: 21/22
  • N4 Pre-noun Adjectival そんな and N4 lesson 5: 4/20
  • N4 Expression その頃 and N4 lesson 2: 8/17
  • N4 Conjuction それで and N4 lesson 10: 11/18

New ones:

  • N4 Noun 以下 and N4 lesson 5: 7/20
  • N4 Adverb 以外 and N4 lesson 5: 8/20
  • N4 Noun 以上 and N4 lesson 5: 6/20, N2 lesson 2: 3/24 and N2 lesson 2: 4/24

As said, I’m at your disposal whenever you work on this.

良い週末を
