Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

Yea should I have to return definitely taking a trip during winter with two full suitcases and then gonna request a family member join me so that I can then have 4 suit cases back. Maybe if anyone comes to visit I can give them some odds n ends too lol

I’m happy to report some actual progress. I read the last 3 volumes of 三ツ星カラーズ that I owned. (not a series I care to continue) and 2 volumes of カードキャプターさくら. I’ve never read the manga and I didn’t watch the anime until much later in life, but man I think I love Cardcaptors. Not even a huge fan of Clamp, but the art here is just peak early 2000s. Such a golden age for anime/manga.

That brings me back in line with my current reading goals. I think I just needed to go for some low hanging fruit to get me warmed up for manga again. After I finish the 3rd volume of Cardcaptors I’ll probably start reading Aria the Masterpiece finally.

Oh and I almost failed with not getting more books. My mom picked a children’s book up for me from Goodwill this weekend. Her suspicion was correct though, it’s in Chinese, not Japanese.

Well done :sunglasses: that’s pretty decent. I like tracking what I’ve read so I can go back and see how much I’ve covered, especially if I’m not feeling like I’m improving.

Thanks, goal is 15 per month if I can. It still only covers about half my manga collection so far though.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked to know how many I had, especially when I counted up my textbooks

I failed on not adding more books to the collection, an order just arrived and I’ve a further order on CD Japan with pre-order/ additional recently released volumes of series I need to complete.

Been a while since I’ve participated in this thread…Good news, bad news folks.

The good news is that I just went to Japan for the first time and it was AMAZING! Truly the trip of a lifetime and I’m already planning the next one!

But I think where you can see this is going…
The bad news is I came home with more than a few more books… my rehab is not going well :joy:

But I HAVE finished two more manga volumes! (yay!)

Tell me how easy that Kirby book is! Ive been eyeing those types of books recently at the Book-off and kinda browse but havnt stuck my nose in to fully understand so Im curious of its difficulty.

Yeah, I’m hoping to send some stuff home with my partners if they’re able to visit me before then, but even still I’ll likely have to hire yamato’s international service. Still, I decided when I came over that I wasn’t going to play the “No I can’t buy that because I’m leaving in 5 years-” game, so this is simply the outcome of that. Not exactly helped by internationally shipping problems, though.

Congrats! Although my instinct is to defend xxxHolic and Tsubasa, I never actually got into Cardcaptor. I still see stuff around for it over here, though.

Thank you! And yeah, it did make me feel a bit better about my current stagnation, since I didn’t really realize how much I’d already done previously.

:handshake:

Well, you’ve seen the company you’re with in here, so there’s few of us who could really cast stones :joy:

Sadly no reading yet today, BUT. WK is under control, and BP is in process, so it’s still an improvement!

I know this wasn’t directed at me but I have quite a few of those books though not the Kirby one. They’re full furigana from what I can tell and they have 1-5 symbols on the spine (the Kirby one has 2) which show relative difficulty (one is the easiest).

There’s also a part on the back of the book that shows if it’s for 小学 or 中学 and if it’s 初級, 中級 or 上級 within those. There’s also at least 5 different publishers that do different types of similar books (TO junior, 角川つばさ, 青い鳥, 集英社みらい etc).

I have tried to read a few of them of different levels but difficulty for me was based on if I knew the story and how much of the vocab I knew.

I found the Demon Slayer Novelisation easier than The Girl who leapt through time even though the Demon Slayer one was of a higher level.

Yea, Im aware some of the books have that rating system but I could never find quite where each one stands on difficulty but I knew they were supposed to be relatively easy. As per the rules of this thread Im trying to not buy anything new. Once I finish Girl who can talk to Animals I have a Maruko-chan to move to which will be slow due to how much pass/caus it uses.

Maybe ill snag one though if its cheap.

I lied! It wasn’t much, but I did actually have time to get through a few pages of 魔いりました入間くん, which my friend is lending to me. Might be able to do the same today, but I gotta get through classes first.

Quick check in: just a few pages of 魔りました over the weekend, sadly. How’d everyone else do?

Managed to read another 6 volumes of manga since my last visit, now on 68 volumes read.
Currently reading the most recent volume of Dragon Quest: Adventures of Dai prequel (Avan’s story) then my next series is となりの妖怪さん (5 in that set including a short story style manga book).

Expecting となりの妖怪さん to be more difficult because there is no furigana but the vocab seems like it’s every day stuff so hopefully not too bad :crossed_fingers:

I was bad, didn’t read at all this weekend. I had a migraine on Friday, which ended up having a huge impact on my weekend. On Saturday I took a 2 hour nap, had to go out and do a bunch of stuff, started not feeling well, then came back home and fell asleep again at 6pm…and slept until 8am the next day.

I read manga from 2010-2015, I can buy volumes from that age for 100-200 yen each.
And since I read it 10 years ago I kinda, but not really remember what happened.

Hope everyone is doing well with their book backlogs :’)

Ha…ha ha…
Yeah I haven’t gotten through anything

I did get that new bookshelf set up, so I can at least do some re-organizing, when I finally get the spoons together for it.

In the last 9 days I’ve managed 147 pages of となりの妖怪さん manga. There’s almost no Furigana (just some on the first instances of names or unusual vocabulary) which isn’t too bad as it’s mostly slice of life with some new words added in but I feel like my understanding is almost nonexistent and I’ve no idea why. It’s frustrating and disheartening.

It’s throwing me for a loop and I don’t know if it’s because I’ve hit another one of those weird plateaus that then feel like they boost your level or if it’s just because I’m starting to burn out on manga or something else.

I’ve also restarted Bunpro grammar to try to get a better handle on stuff again but no idea if it’s helping or I’m just recycling through old habits in an attempt to stop myself spiralling into the weird abyss of re-studying old stuff that I never fully understand.

I’m way off track and don’t think I’m going to get another 6 volumes of manga finished this month to get back on track but we’ll see.

I haven’t done a whole lot of reading lately, just a few chapters of よつば here and there and some Genki readers, but those hardly count. I have, however, been studying my ass off for the N4 JLPT. And if I can believe the Bunpro practice exams, it’s actually mostly sticking, too!

As preparation I’m working through several JLPT prep books, and I’m trying to finish Genki II. Finished a few of the prep books already, so that’s some of the textbook backlog done! Somewhat behind on where I wanted to be in Genki II by now, but I needed a minor break from the book. Going to continue working on it this week though, otherwise there’s too little time between finishing it and doing the test, and I wouldn’t have time to review things…

As I finish more JLPT prep books I’m hoping to be able to read more for fun again.
