Book collector rehab (actually reading what you own accountability thread)

Oh god I hate those. They often seem to be followed afterwards by a like “oh hey, I think I actually feel like I’ve gotten better at this” kind of jump, but while you’re in the middle of one it’s miserable. Godspeed my guy.

And whether you get through 6 more volumes or not, the 147 pages you’ve already done are still cool as hell!

I wish I could say the same for N2 - I’ve been able to keep my wanikani spinning this week, but bunpro is still paused and reading is absolutely not happening because I’ve been scrambling to keep on top of class prep.

Why can’t we just have infinite time and money for all the thingsssssss :sob:

this is so cute, , ,

Yep, those plateaus. Doesn’t help when you already feel miserable because if the heat and generally feeling unwell after a chest infection either  just glad that’s on the mend.

Thanks, I managed to finish the last 101 pages of that volume, but think I’m going to reassess my study approach which will remove some of my time from reading, so my progress is going to be that much slower. Still a step in the right direction though :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ll let you know! I couldn’t find the first volume anywhere! But I think I understood correctly that the series is made for young readers (there were only two star and three star books wherever I looked )

Yea that’s what I find too. I’ve always looked for 1 star or bird or whatever symbol they choose but never can. And I don’t know enough about it to actually look.

reading update

I have read a few pages of my light novel this week, but it feels like its taking longer than usual lol rip

I feel like I am going through some sort of brain fog lately where Japanese suddenly seems a lot harder

next week… ganbarou…

This link will take you directly to the 角川つばさ文庫 section for their 1 feather books. What you’re looking for on other publishers is a section for their books of 小学校低学年 level which should be mostly the 1 star, 1 feather, 1 leaf, 1 bird etc. It should show you their lowest level series.

I have tried a few of the 1 feather ones from 角川つばさ文庫 and still found them quite difficult even when I was reading stuff like ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂. Some will obviously be easier than others but expect them to still be a challenge if stepping up from graded readers.

Hope that helps.

Things have been kind of slow on my end for reading, but I think I also ended up getting the 謎の風邪 that’s been going around since Golden Week and felt like crap for a week and a half.

But, I did finish volume 9 and 10 of 星降る王国のニナ and am halfway through volume 11. I’ve also gotten hooked on a new web series called 「身分差に終わった恋を、今さらですが」(which unfortunately only seems to be on cmoa.jp so far, which is an awful website imo). Plus weekly Kiki readings, which we’re currently on the last chapter of!

However, I maaaay have bought new books yesterday. In my defense, I’ve already paged through them a bit and they’re very interesting! I’m also going to try making umeshu for the first time this weekend, so the はじめての梅仕事 book is very relevant.

So I bought 1万 worth of N4 study books BUT they are all mostly reading and to solidify knowledge as I’m reaching the end of my N3 Grammer journey. I’m gonna go over them with my teacher before switching over to N3.
MY hope is for N3 this winter but with my Masters that’s proving a tad hard.

Might go back to reading manga too as I haven’t been motivated to read my LNs

Summary

Though I’ve been getting plenty of reading practice from some other materials which has been a nice way of proving to myself of my comprehension. Maybe it’s time for videos.

Despite the complete illogic of it, it sure does seem like I passed whatever I had around this thread, huh :sob:
But good job on your other reading! And good luck with your umeshu efforts - I think my friend did that a few years back, but I don’t remember how it turned out.

I’m not sure how expensive N4 study books are by default but that sounds like a lot of study books o.o

I LIVE! Sorta. I got through about a volume of 魔りました on Friday, which is more than I think I’ve done all month, so I’ll take that as a victory.

I’m not sure where I left off with you guys. Life has kept me a bit busy lately. I did finish another volume of 恐怖コレクター and have been reading ふしぎな声のする町で: ものだま探偵団.

I haven’t been reading books a ton, but I did start playing 放課後少年 and PostPetDS again. These are both games I had previously started last year and didn’t finish. I completely restarted PostPet, because I couldn’t remember what was going on.

Also I was bad and ordered more japanese games. Like…4 more japanese games. 2 of them were planned purchases from the beginning of the year. Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth and ほの暮らしの庭. ほの暮らしの庭 is a farming sim made by the same people who make Yomawari. It looks like it has dark twist. The first time I saw it I knew it was going to be an instant purchase for me. Then my unplanned purchases were Natsume’s Book of Friends: Hazuki no Shirushi and the infamous Buddy Mission Bond. Both of them apparently came back in stock on Play Asia and the prices were down from usual. I was able to get them each for less than $50 (Buddy Mission Bond was slightly cheaper on ebay), which is still expensive, but attainable compared to the $60-$80+ they were before. I swear this happens to me every year where I end up binge buying things in the summer. :see_no_evil:

I mean, I dont think they increase as they get more advanced but the average books is about 1500円. I think I bought about 6 or so bucks. 3 of the Japan Times(2 practice style books and the JLPT4 Buddy) and I think three Shinkanzen Masters? Reading, Listening and Grammar.

So a hefty amount for sure, but considering it should be easy for me minus the Pass/Caus because I still struggle with that. Its all mostly because Intend to mock exam myself in July and see how I compare

I read! Started and finished a book on my English backlog same day - I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would and kept hoping it would get better… it just never did :'D Still going to read the two sequels, but I’ll have to adjust my expectations.

Also read a chapter of よつばと! and two more graded readers. Really noticing my progress there, because last time I tried these readers I was lost. Now they’re perfectly fine

But maybe the biggest change is that I’ve started a ‘now reading/playing’ shelf. To take away the decision paralysis. A maximum of three books and three games are allowed to be on there at a time, and those are what I choose from when I want to read or play something. Some people add movies/series or the like to it as well, but I chose not to. I think you’re also supposed to dedicate like an hour a day to reading/playing etc. what you have on the shelf (to actively work on your backlog), but with everything else I need to do in a day already, I’m letting my entertainment be free from need.

Howdy everyone! :cowboy_hat_face:

I have been lurking in here since I joined a month or so ago and I finally got the courage to post haha.
I don’t (yet) have an enormous backlog of japanese books (compared to my french collection) but I just bought 3 billingual ones at my local library and the numbers of Epub/pdf I have is slowly starting to creep up.
I am still early in my journey (around mid N5) so most books are innacessible currently (like kiki and harry potter that I have) but I still try to read a lot!
I have the satori reader membership and finished the spring story and already on chapter 9 of summer (out of 10).
I also discovered the super helpful Jrpg sakura by the same team as the tadoku graded reader, you need an account to access the books but they are free and you can download epubs and sometimes audio from it.
I have read 6 of the 7 level A story (with varying degree of comprehension).
Here are the few books I have, my goal is to read at least 2 pages a day or a chapter from satori reader (2 if I have already read them).

Books in questions

I don’t think I will post here daily but I’ll pass from time to time to keep myself accountable.

Wish me luck!

Good luck in your reading journey and welcome to the forums

Thanks for the link as well, that could be pretty helpful for others at a similar stage in their transition from textbook to native content and free is always helpful

What are you looking forward to reading the most once you feel comfortable enough with reading Japanese content?

Thank you!

Really hope more people discover the Sakura website, it’s really a good resource as free text for beginner are rare.

I don’t have a specific book I am hoping to read but being able to dive into niche manga / video games that have not been translated yet and maybe translate some of those to bring it to new people is what I am aiming for.

For example currently there is not enough chapters for the manga “Drifters” ( from the Hellsing creator) to release as a stand alone volume so the RAW scans for the next 5-6 chapters have been floating around for the past 3 or 4 years but no one as translated them yet ( I have all the available volume in french and can’t wait for the next one).

So that’s my main idea
Also being able to play Tales of Symphonia or Devil May Cry in Japanese would be neat haha.

That makes sense, there’s a few non translated manga that I’ve read which I wouldn’t have been able to without knowing Japanese and Tales of Symphonia is on my list to play in Japanese too
