Daily Listening Practice (Group Activity)

Hi All!

Hope everyone is having a fantastic week and gearing up for a nice weekend. Just thought I would start a new thread here on the forum with short daily listening challenges using clips taken from this series of audiobooks available on Audible (Japan).

The series itself is aimed at kids, and includes a lot of really famous books from many languages, so there are sure to be some titles in there that you have heard of before.

:ear: Goal :ear:

Basically the goal with these will simply be to listen to the audio, and see if you are able to catch what is being said! What grammar points are being used… How about the vocabulary? So that nothing is spoiled for other people that want to have their own guesses at what is being said, please use the hide feature, as I have demonstrated below.

My Guess

What is love, baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more.

I will aim to keep all clips somewhere between 10 to 25 seconds at the most, with a mix of different levels. Also, please feel free to discuss with other users about their translations or ask for help where needed!

To get the ball rolling we have a short clip from the audio book 透明人間.

I will continue adding new clips once a day at around the same time! Happy listening, and I hope this can become a fun little activity for some of you!

Oh bois, would I love a daily listening practices. My grammars and vocab is fine. But lacking frequent listening make my ear sad. This would surely helps.

I feel like I should know all the words here, but I couldn’t understand all of it. Here’s what I could make out.

My Best Guess

The first man needs to buy luggage for a trip, but the trip is tomorrow. He’s worried he won’t be able to get everything he needs in time to go. Both of the other people seem to be telling him that it will be difficult, maybe implying that it’s impossible?

This is what I heard

すぐに荷物が必要なんだ。
今日中には無理ですよ。
明日になるか。(?)を使って、すぐに届けさせることができないか。
男はがっかりした(?)が今日中には無理だということ丁寧に説明すると、納得したらしい。

Meaning

I think this guy wanted his luggage as soon as possible, but the lady told him that its not possible by today. He asked if it could be delivered by (?)
But apparently in the end he understood it isn’t really possible (not sure if it means having the luggage today or if it could be delivered to him).
(English is my 2nd language so I’m sorry if there is any weirdness in my text )

Great idea! Thanks Asher.

This is useful. I feel like I need to learn words twice. Once when I initially learn the word, and again in picking it up when spoken.

What sounds like non-sense is actually just a lot of words I already “know”, just can’t recognise when spoken in a sentence.

I dont know how to do the hide feature, if someone can show me how, I would enjoy partaking as well.
According to two other hidden posts though, I was pretty close with what they said.

This is the on advantage I think using anki has, in that when I learn a new word, I am also given it in a sentence. So then when in the wild, if I hear it, I can further make those connection points. I just wish more resources used a listen-only method for learning as well. Doesnt matter how well I can read, if I cant hear it and understand, almost pointless.

This text will be hidden, you can click the cog in the text entry box too. Fix the spelling mistake on “detailss” for it to work.

I mean Bunpro gives lots of context sentences too tbf. It’s just that when I know what to listen for it’s easy, but when I don’t it’s completely different. I use the listening cram to practice when I can be bothered

@Vaminta
Yea, what I mean to say is, at least in the 2k core decks, it gives a sentence with no context clues and Im forced to understand and pick out the word. In the beginning this was difficult with very few words under my belt, but now about halfway through, I am more or less plus oneong(Japanese keyboard and cant find the proper key)

So if I cant pickout the word, I often cant understand the sentence. This does lead to some sentence memorization, but that isnt the worst since it doesnt happen to every sentence, and I have the tools to change sentences if I so wanted to(and have since a few of them were really difficult or the audio quality no good).

And to test it out

Summary

My Initial thoughts(That I now know to be wrongish)
The man wanted his luggage delivered by tomorrow but the woman says its not possible. He wonders what he can do to make it possible. The Narrator says that it could not happen.

Do you guys listen to the audio only once?
I replayed it multiple times.

I Heard

Guy 1: すぐに荷物が必要なんだ。
Lady : 今日中にが無理ですよ!
Guy 1: 明日にがなのか?
Guy 1: (???) を使てすぐに届けさせることができないか?
Guy 2: 男はがっかりした (???) が今日中には無理だということ丁寧に説明すると納得したらしい。

My guess of the meaning

Guy 1: I need my luggage as soon as possible.
Lady : It’s not possible today!
Guy 1: It’s only available tomorrow?
Guy 1: Can’t we use ??? to get it delivered immediately?

Guy 2: The man was disappointed. However, it seems like he was convinced that it was impossible to deliver the luggage today after polite explanation from the lady.
(No idea what was the ??? in the sentence).

There’s definitely no problem with playing it multiple times I think! You could maybe even do one guess from the first attempt, and a second guess after a few more attempts.

The mystery word

馬車 carriage/wagon

This was a fun challenge. Way over my Japanese level but it was nice to try.

My guess

The man wanted something. But the woman said it’s not possible today. The man said that then he needs it tomorrow.

I pause liberally to give myself time to process what I’ve just heard.
Especially with onyomi words it might take a moment to realize what fits the context.

Slightly long one today, but it is a really nice little piece of dialogue that rounds out well from start to finish. This one is from 桜の園.
