what happened to the ability in the review settings menu to have vocab reviews default to listening or reading mode? im currently adding vocab without using a deck and they all get added as flashcards and i have to change each one to listening/reading manually.

Suggestion:
When a vocab item has multiple correct readings, accept those readings as correct answers.

Recent example:
For ēš„ē¢ŗ (JLPT N3) | Bunpro, Bunpro only accepts ć¦ćć‹ć, even though the page itself lists both ć¦ćć‹ć and ć¦ć£ć‹ć as correct readings/spellings. I believe most vocab items that have multiple readings will currently only be marked correct when entering the first reading Bunpro lists, but I’m sure I’ve come across a handful of items where a second reading is also accepted. I think all correct readings should be accepted. Maybe with an exception for readings that are very rare.

Is FSRS still in the pipeline to be rolled out? What’s the timeline on that?

for anybody else having this problem: the reading/listening options are only greyed out when the default answertype is set to manual. by setting it to reveal and grade, listening and reading type questions will be available again.

for ease of use i suggest maybe not graying out those option^^ i really thought they were not available. as the question type is on top, so i want to choose this first and didnt even look at the answer option below. cause why deal with those, if my preferred question type isnt even available? ^^

Is it possible to somehow highlight or make the cram selection a little more intuitive?

Sometimes, I just want to cram everything I’m learning from lesson 2, for example, or everything I’ve learned in lesson 1 and everything I’m learning in lesson 2.

I have to select one at a time (unless there’s a quicker way to do this), which is quite annoying, so this QOL feature would make the cram sessions more appealing if I could get into them within a couple of clicks.

Also highlighting what has been learned would be good, like when you view a deck, having something like:

When you’re selecting the content to cram, there’s an aditional settings where you can mark to not see any new word, just the ones you’ve already studied

Oh now I feel silly. I thought this option meant I will only see questions I’ve already been asked as part of reviews, e.g., for 私, if I had seen ā€œMy name is Rihanna.ā€ in reviews, I could see it again in cram sessions, but if I had not seen ā€œHe is good at making me laugh.ā€ I wouldn’t see it in the cram session.

I can add this with the next update, however it is already possible to enable gestures for flashcards.
And you can change gesture direction for right and wrong. :grinning::+1:

It would be great to be able to enable or disable the ā€œofficialā€ study sentences in order to prioritize user-created self-study sentences.

If users are from non-English-speaking countries and do not have access to Bunpro’s official translations, or if those translations are still partial, it can sometimes be difficult to fully grasp the scope of certain terms or even memorize them. This is because the user is forced into an acrobatic mental exercise: thinking in Japanese, reading in English, translating it into their native language, and then trying to store the term while dealing with all these obstacles.

In my case, I have come across terms that were extremely hard for me to memorize because the Japanese word was difficult to understand and the English word did not resemble my native-language equivalent at all. If I could disable all 10, or at least part of, the example sentences and replace them with 10 sentences created by me in my own language, this would greatly improve my retention.

As far as I know, this is currently not possible on the platform and would only require providing the option to enable or disable sentences one by one.

PD: Maybe the option to edit the ā€œofficialā€ sentences so we can translate the phrases by ourselves?

sadly self study questions currently aren’t working this way (or was this changed?).

what kind of review mode are you using at the moment? bunpro doesnt offer my native language, either. and oftentimes i find myself using words in my own language for translations only to see the english translation seems off, compared on how i would translate it into my language. but i only use self grade reviews (listening or reading). so i dont rely all that much on the english translation and just use it as a vague suggestion and rather check myself on general ā€œvibeā€ of the sentence and word. this goes for learning and grading.

would that be something that works for you in the meantime?

In my case, I rely a lot on connecting the idea or purpose of a Japanese word directly with my native language. Often, my language captures exactly the nuance the Japanese word is trying to convey, while English can be ambiguous or not quite cover it. This forces me to think in English first and then translate to my language, which makes the process more complicated and slower.

Of course, you could try studying another way, but I think it’s much more effective to learn directly from Japanese to your native language, rather than going through double translation.

I know many people can study using only Japanese, but the problem is that many example sentences mix grammar, vocabulary, or expressions the learner hasn’t learned yet, which makes reviews harder and more exhausting. Reading only in Japanese might improve your reading comprehension, but that’s not really the main goal of the reviews. The purpose of the reviews is to understand a single grammar point or new word and practice it until you can use it naturally, without unnecessary distractions or complications.

In short, connecting Japanese directly to what I already know in my language helps me retain and use what I learn much better, and avoids the mental hassle of translating through English first.

Regarding self-study sentences, will they be available for reading mode as well in the near future ? I’m a bit puzzled as to why it’s not the case already, since they seem to have everything needed for a reading mode review

I dislike the UX of category selection in B-Point Shop. I’d prefer if clicking on a category header opened ā€œallā€ by default and only then I could go for a specific filter. Having 2 clicks for opening a category without filters is imo too many. Also I don’t like category dropdowns staying open and having to close them manually. This makes switching between categories more complicated than it should be

I’ve been using the new reading reviews for the cram. Just saying how I use them and so you guys can see where can be improved.
I recently started using this when I’m eating, listening and then reviewing from there. A function that loops the audio would be very helpful, because sometimes I’d like to hear a few times without having to keep pressing the play button.

I would also go to the special section where I can select the sections where I’m more adept or seasoned at, so that it’ll be easier for me to catch words I’m familiar with, and because I’m more likely to understand the example sentences. But there will be some sentences that comes up with vocabs that I’ve not encounter. I don’t think there is an option to go direct to the vocab of those words so something like that would be useful, or even better, being able to hide or remove from queue when those sentences pops up would be good!

Also, what does it mean between the ā€œokayā€ and ā€œgoodā€?

ā€œFill Inā€ and ā€œReveal and Gradeā€ as an option for the cramming section.

I love it for the reviews and this is the main reason I avoid cramming even though I’d like to use it.

My daily goal for grammar right now is 4 grammar points. Sometimes there are two similar grammar points in the deck that get split across days, and it would be nice to be able to study them together by picking the day’s lessons from the deck, like with Wanikani’s lesson picker. I know you can manually add grammar points straight to the review queue, but this doesn’t seem to count towards the daily goal, and it’s a bit cumbersome way of going about it anyway. Do you think a lesson picker feature like this is feasible?

I love this. I remember searching for it in the past as I worry I might get strain from pushing the buttons at the bottom. Is it new, or was I just bad at looking at the options?

Is single tap as reveal answer going to be an option?

buimping this - it seems weird that listening questions don’t show the translation by default. Any thoughts?

We currently don’t have plans to add translations for the transcripts. Ideally in all cases the reasons given for wrong answers, along with the transcript in Japanese, should be enough to see why certain things don’t make sense as answers. The reasons themselves often contain a partial translation for this purpose. If there are any questions where you still can’t work out why an answer is wrong based on the reason then definitely feel free to report it and we will try to make it clearer.

Also apologies for no one responding before. This thread is checked very regularly by staff, even if there is no response. It generally isn’t possible to give detailed replies to every idea we receive. We definitely see and hear you though!

Thanks for the reply! Sorry I think my original feature request might have been unclear. I mean the translation for the question itself for ā€œlisteningā€ type reviews for vocab/grammar

The translation is already there, and shows up at the end of the session

My feature request was to have the translation show up when marking the grammar point as "Hard"or "Good"as well (like the other question types).

to me, this seems a little like a bug, but if it’s intentional, I’m curious of to why listening type questions are different
