Why? Because…
if you ask me why…
the reason why is…
it is because…

Structure

  • どうして / なぜ + Phrase1 + かというと / かといえば 、 Phrase2 + のだ / からだ / ためだ
  • Phrase1。 どうして / なぜ + かというと / かといえば + Phrase2 + のだ / からだ / ためだ
  • どうして / なぜ + Verb + (の) + かというと / かといえば

:warning: In casual speech の can be changed to ん and と to って

[Used to emphasize a reason or cause (phrase 2) for phrase 1 by delaying the response and forcing the listener to wait. This creates a dramatic effect]
[なぜ is a word used more often in writing, and どうして is used more often in speech]

Any particular reason this example switches from informal to formal?

Also can なんで be used in informal situations for this pattern? Like なんでかってゆうと?

Here’s an article on the differences between というのは、というのも、なぜかというと、どうしてかというと and なんでかというと:

In short, you can use なんでかというと informally.
They also have articles for all the other conjunctions here :

The first example sentence is the only one that uses this construction and it’s not clear where this even comes from, can someone tell me what’s going on here?
