Interesting how this compares to ほど. It looks like they both have “to the extent that” meaning, and the only thing changing seems to be the order of the reason and the result clauses. Very convenient 
苦しさの余り、大きな声を出してしまった。
大きな声を出してしまうほど、苦しかった。
These two seem to mean the same thing to me.

I’m not sure what part of the sentence is the main clause in this grammar point. I think it’s part B? I feel the explanation could use more detail, like specifically which part of the sentence is the main clause, and what do the different tenses for the verb before あまり achieve?
What is the point of the gold highlighting for り in the image below? The word 怒り is a dictionary noun (source). I understand that 怒る is also a verb, and the noun is arguably derived from the verb. But what does the highlighting have to do with this lesson? What does it even mean in general? It honestly just confuses me during reviews.
“A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar” (p.5) when differentiating あまり x すぎる says the following:
“(…) amari is used only when the verb or noun represents a psychological action or state”
Bunpro has the following example:
先輩は飲み会でお酒を沢山飲んだあまり、一人で帰ることができなかった。
Wouldn’t あまり then be incorrect here? Since 飲む does not represent a psychological action.
