飽くまで(も)・あくまで(も) - Grammar Discussion

just
only
merely
strictly

Structure

  • あくまで ( ) + Phrase

[飽くまで(も) comes from verb 飽く(nowadays 飽きる) and particle まで, therefore it means “until one gets sick of …”]

飽くまで(も) is used when what is said might sound arrogant or controversial to the listener if 飽くまで(も) is omitted. Speakers will often distance themselves to the greatest extent possible by stating that it is only their personal opinion/view to the “utmost”]

[Emphasis is placed on “just,” “only,” and so on]

[Very often used with け(れ)ど(も)、が、に過ぎない、でしかない、だけ、ので、and から]
