Hopefully this is the right thread for this :slight_smile:

I’ve been rewatching Jujutsu Kaisen with my family. We watch it in Japanese with English subtitles. I try to scan each subtitle ASAP then listen along with the Japanese to see how much I can identify.

This is the 3rd time we’ve watched the series over the past 2 years. Previously I’ve been able to pick out the odd word here and there. But now that I have started N4 grammar/vocab, there are whole sentences that I understand completely.

I’ve read before that shonen manga/anime is roughly pitched at N3 level, so hopefully by the time we watch the series for a fourth time I might not need subtitles…? Lol.

I recommend natively to check the difficulty level. here is the jujutsu kaisen page on natively https://learnnatively.com/tv/5a57da84c2/. it seems to be ranked at N2.

It might take me a bit longer until I can understand it all without subtitles then!

I also have a couple of Japanese manga, Spy x Family and Frieren, so I might start with Frieren first as it’s graded lower :+1:

Yes this is the right thread!
The actual answer is “comprehensable input”, there is more than one strat…

  • ‘Slice of life manga like yotsuba, shirokuma cafe, nichijo ect’ is the easiest becuase they use normal words, like the words you are studying
  • ‘Tolerate the ambiguity’ accept that you won’t understand everything and start already, you need to practice listening before you can start understanding
  • My strat is find something you can understand from the pictures.

Recipies show you the Japanese word while showing you the ingredient or action.
Also why I enjoyed dungeon meishi
Jujitsu kaizen the jokes didn’t quite land, but I enjoyed the fight scenes
One Punch Man manga, wasn’t fun without the jokes
Spy family I enjoyed fun action scenes, but wasn’t able to follow the East/West Berlin politics.
And Blue Exorcist is my fav

We love Dungeon meshi! We’ve watched season 1 and just bought the complete manga box set (in English).

I think maybe watching something in Japanese where I’ve already seen and read the English (Dungeon meshi, Spy Family, Frieren, JJK) might be productive.

I’ve tried playing Pokemon Violet in Japanese, making notes on each word or grammar point I don’t understand, but it is taking ages and I spend more time looking things up than I do playing.

I think, for me, immersion at N5 level is too much of a time-sink, so I’ll wait until I know a bit more, so my known-unknown ratio is a bit better!

I recommend watching things in Japanese with Japanese subtitles for immersion :slight_smile:
It takes a while to get used to it in the beginning but after awhile you’ll not even realize it isn’t in English, even at N5 level!

The main issue I noticed though is that you need to watch or read things you’re actually interested in. There are a lot of shows that could be good to watch for a learner but if you have no interest in it, you’ll just be bored.

Watched the second to last blue Exorcist episode today.
I’m thinking of watching 僕のいない町 next. I plan on doing the Subs2srs deck along side watching it on Netflix.

I saw episode 2 of 僕のいない町 Erased.
I mined from かがみの孤城, but didn’t read any new pages
Spent an hour reading the Japanese dictionary to get all these definitions

完全に大規模な破壊または壊滅を引き起こす
這う：ゆっくり動く
憂鬱：気分が沈む、落ち込む I recognize this as 'the joyo kanji with the most strokes
連帯：人と人などの間の強い関係のこと

Tried listening to NHK 1 radio (on their website using vpn to Japan)
And they were talking something about 衆議院 and 国会のやれやれの中断とやら (by the way both these words Ive learned 3 days ago, even though “why would I need 衆議院 when I still have no idea about their political system?” I still don’t know why I need it but now it’s with me I guess)

In general I had no idea what were they talking about but it seems like that was some kind of debate, they were saying “〇〇しておりますう” and talking something about trump and 対話 with 米国. (Well, it seems that I have an idea)

Strange experience. I think I’ll be trying this radii-station’s 攻略 once in a while.

today I watched ちひろさん

the plot is very loose which actually made me stop a lot because I wasn’t sure if I missed something. But instead it was vague on purpose.

ca. 2 hour movie

just gave it a try too. I’ll look into it every now and then. But it annoys me that it doesn’t seem to work in Firefox, but it’s fine on my phone :frowning:
