JLPT December 2023

Does anyone who’s taken N2 have any advice about which grammar points come up often?

I’m guessing stuff like “ざるを得ない” and “もかまわず” on Bunpro come up only once in a blue moon, maybe more often on N1 (?), and aren’t worth stressing over so much … ?

I have no idea about how often those come up on the JLPT but I see them fairly often when reading, especially ざるを得ない. I saw it three times today so far with a bit over two hours of reading Norwegian Wood and I saw もかまわず once, as far as I remember. From the N2 sample readings I have looked at it seems to be pretty random in how common or uncommon the grammar actually is (for me) but besides Bunpro I am not doing any test specific prep (currently). The ones I personally don’t see often are ones used for offering opinion or judgement since I don’t really read any opinion articles or essays and they seem to make up a lot of the material used for N2.

I wonder if there is a resource that lists how frequently certain things come up on the test? If you find out then let me know - I also want to know the answer to this 笑

I’m hoping to take the JLPT for the first time in December (N5). Is there anything I need to get ready for the application form? I know I need a photo of myself, but are there any other things/pieces of information that I need that’s not obvious

Good luck with it! It’s a different process depending on the country you’re in. Can you let us know which country you’re looking to apply from/for, so then we forum members can hopefully help you out?

UK (either England or Wales depending on whether I can book a London slot quick enough)

For SOAS(London) , you will just need your address and card / payment stuff. Just be careful when filling the info as in some parts they want capital letters. The application form is quite simple and easy to fill.

Just be ready early in the morning and apply as quickly as possible. The places fill up really fast. The application I think opens on 25th August this time at 8am. The photo is for later when you will get your voucher to print off.

Good luck with the application and exam!

This will be my first time taking the exam (N3) and I was wondering, based on your experiences, how quickly do the spots get filled up?

Is 1500 kanji enough for N2? I might feel more comfortable taking N3 though. Kanji is definitely my strong point right now.

Regardless I really hate how the JLPT is once a year in America. I think it’s absurd to use 4th of July as an excuse for us not to have it twice a year. Flying to Canada is just too expensive to take the test as well. I mean, when I checked it would be like $600 total just for a flight, hotel, and the test fee. And unless you feel like flying out the same day, you’ll probably be spending 2 nights and have to get food obviously.

Canada Day is fine but 4th of July and muh freedoms? Nope. I just don’t get it lol

Oh my god thats the reason? I too am frustrated America only has it once a year (and not in very many cities so I have to drive 6+ hours). 4th of July isn’t even THAT major of a holiday here. Not like its some Christmas tier holiday.

Id also like to add I wish you didn’t have to live in Japan to take it there since I was there on a trip during this years summer test.

Really depends on the country & even the venue within the country.

That’s what I was thinking since they’re all populated cities in US. the 2 I was thinking are DC or Philadelphia

I’m surprised that the Philly N2 is already booked. I guess it must be the overflow from NYC though. I can’t think of any other reason the N2 would be completely booked. There’s tons of slots left for the N1 in Philly, I just thought not many people study Japanese in Philly. It also might be students from Princeton or something.

Just registered for Georgia’s N3! N2 would be more fun but I have to pass n3 to get exempt from a class at my university.

Does anyone know how to check the exact date and time of the test? I can’t seem to find that anywhere.

The date is 12/3, I can’t seem to find an exact time though yet!

Test guide this shows mostly everything and I haven’t finished looking through so it may say in there

I ended up signing up for the N2 this year since I passed the N3 last year. Honestly not sure how much time I’ll be able to study for it this time around considering full time work + college - and I’m playing in a game tournament that won’t end until the end of September. I’m confident in grammar and listening but kanji and reading is gonna be a big problem point for me lol.

I wouldn’t have signed up this year if I wasn’t planning on moving to Japan around this time next year where I’d like to at least have N2 for job applications. And as many have pointed out above me, it’s a bit ridiculous that it’s only once a year in the US.

I’ve signed up for the N4

It’s my first time taking a JLPT, and I’m super excited! I’ve been learning Japanese on and off for something like 15 years now, and I am so ready to finally break through the beginner/upper beginner barrier I seem to have constructed for myself.

Bunpro has been a game-changer, so I’m very grateful for it!

Good luck in your studies everybody :shamrock:

Decided to sign up for the N3. The purportedly hardest parts of the JLPT are also the parts I’m most solid on, so it should be easy to make up the difference in the other areas in the meantime.
