JLPT December 2023

Up for meeting afterwards! Are you going to CocoIchibanya?

Not necessarily, that’s my fall back to kill time until my coach departs if there’s no meet-up. Somewhere nearer the test-centre will probably be better

You can always just increase the spice level. All the way up to level 20 if you’d like lol

Provided no more relatives die, I don’t get caught up in a job search, I don’t have to deal with more marriage/immigration paperwork, my house doesn’t collapse on top of me, or a random Godzilla, it’s looking like I’m attacking the N2 again. Already studying daily! Let’s go!

While the UK branch of Coco is decent, they sadly don’t reach the master level they have in Japan.
It’s a good make-shift though, and I’d definitely join if I was going to test in UK.

I’ll have to settle for a Ramen Kagura

I just took an N2 practice test for the first time and uhhhhh… pray for me

(I did one of the free ones on the Todai app. Did pretty poorly on the reading section and spent too much time there so didn’t get through all of listening section, but I did really well on the listening questions I did answer. According to the app I did pass the test, but did not feel comfortable with that result at all.)

I didn’t really feel lost at any point, so I think if I work harder with grinding/immersion these next 2 months I think I’ll be able to pass in December.

See what I mean … :grimacing:

I did the N5 in July(or june i forgot) and it was super easy lmao, I think i was like level 7 in wanikani, barely through the bunpro vocab and did all the grammer. I was way faster than everyone else in the test at that point and got most of them right so it should be a breeze for you

Does being on exchange in Japan supercharge your listening skill development? It’s something I struggling to improve. I can find the time to listen to podcasts whilst doing other things but as I’m not doing it intensively/following some text along with it, I think it’s a slow way to improve… As I increase my vocab, that improves how much I comprehend but…

What about the text understanding and listening part? How did you prepare for that?

Oh yeah definitly… i forgot that must be super annoying to study for outside of japan…

Its just so easy you barely have to study for the text i think, im on exchange in japan so listening is a strong point of mine, but i think for the text i just did some practice reading stuff, although for higher levels a lot more practice is needed i think haha

So I live in Japan and as of late would consider my listening to be weaker than my reading but mostly because not catching words in (very) casual conversation is more annoying than not knowing some specialist word when reading the news. Having said that, I did a mock N1 the other day and the listening was easier than the rest of the test so who knows - I guess the fact that people speak all nicely on the JLPT recordings helps a lot. People in real life don’t sound like that :upside_down_face:

My problem will be is that everyone speaks casually and with a dialect to me, and I’ve gotten used to it now lmaoo

oh you live in Japan, that makes sense. I think it won’t be that easy for anybody over here in Europe. Except for my active efforts to learn, there is no Japanese around at all in my daily life.

Yeah TT If you’re looking for podcasts I found nihongo con teppei pretty good cause he doesn’t speak too fast but repeats the words a lot in a natural(ish) way, and if he uses a tricky word he kinda explains it a bit more(like giving examples), not quite as good as living in Japan, but I studied with it before N5 too

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

Also here to recommend nihongo con teppei :kissing_heart: there’s a couple different ones, the one you want is “nihongo con teppei for beginners”. They’re about 3-5mins long. There’s a large backlog and it’s ongoing nearing 1000 :tada:

There’s also the newer “nihongo con teppei GO” and “nihongo con teppei sleep”. They’re up to about 30 episodes each, similar in level and length to the beginners podcast. feel free to check those out too

I just caught up on the beginners the other day, up to current now  took a few months starting slow with a couple per day, then increasing in number as it got easier about 10-50 a day averaging at about 20ish. I felt such an improvement in listening near the end of the first month. I cruised through the second month, and upped the speed to 1.1 and then 1.2x during the third month (any faster starts to sound warped and unnatural so I decided it was time for the harder podcast anyway)

Working on his original ones now which are definitely more difficult/longer, but I can feel them getting easier everyday. Stick with him and you’ll feel an improvement too :tada::tada:

I really appreciate the good advice. I already tried the first 2 episodes of the “for beginners” one and I like it a lot. It is great that it is short episodes and the way he repeats the words or sentences in different variations helps a lot. I mostly understood what he was talking about and learnt a new expression. :+1:
