It seems like they’re synonyms, but I’ve heard that something the カタカナ version is used to make it sound more cooler or such. Depends on how frequently you hear each word. リビング might be more common than 居間, or the other way around.

Thank you, 居間のほうが好きだから、居間です。It’s the same with キッチン and 台所, I’d rather use the latter.
