Missing Grammar Updated! (July 31st 2025)

Hello!

I hope everyone is doing well and those who took the JLPT aren’t too nervous about their results! After a period of working on other things, we’re happy to announce that we’re refocusing on our push to add missing grammar points to Bunpro!

This post is here to announce what we’re adding, explain how we will approach missing grammar from now on, and also to remind newer users of what we are planning to add (and how you can best make suggestions).

What’s New This Time? :mag:

We’re starting off by adding 11 new grammar points across different levels:

Of course, all new grammar points come not just with a writeup but also come with a full set of example sentences. Be sure to check them out! Please note though that we do not have audio for these new grammar points yet, but the audio will be coming very soon!

Besides new grammar points, in some cases, frequently requested additional information is better served by being added to our existing grammar points. For example, this time we are also updating the writeup for たりする with some extra information on the たりして pattern.

What Comes Next? :arrow_right:

From now on, we are planning on releasing around five new grammar points per month!

We will be filling some gaps in JLPT grammar and, in an effort to be more comprehensive as a general learning and reference tool, we will also be adding more grammar that is considered to be outside of the JLPT. You can currently find these points at the bottom of the Grammar List from the Content menu, or can search for them directly.

‘I Have a Suggestion!’ :raised_hand_with_fingers_splayed:

In the original announcement about the future of missing grammar, we shared a priority list. We will continue to focus on that list for the moment, although suggestions are always welcome.

The original announcement thread is still the best place for suggestions however we will try our best to keep track of suggestions wherever you may make them. We may or may not have a secret list behind the scenes :eyes:

文アマから文プロへ :fountain_pen:

On the content team we are busy working away on various other projects, as well as continually trying to improve the content we already have. Although we can’t quite talk about any of the other projects yet, we hope everyone will enjoy the new grammar writeups, and we thank you for all of your suggestions and feedback so far! :bowing_man:

We’ll see you for the next batch of new grammar next month!

I’ve only finished N4 and N5 so far, and I had been wondering about exactly that grammar point, and why it seemed to be mysteriously absent from BunPro.

Actually same. I learned this point completely through exposure.

Thank you, and great to aim for regular new grammar each month too.

I do not know if it’s a me issue or something wrong with the system, but ガン in N1 isn’t properly showing up in my deck or the learn.

It should be there so let me check on what might be causing the issue!

Edit: Looks like this could be an issue on our end. For the moment, you can manually add the point to your queue from the writeup page itself by following the link in the post, if you would like to. We’ll get the deck placement sorted ASAP! It should be working fine for the other new points, but let us know if you run into any other problems :bowing_man:

Second edit: This should be fixed now!

How exactly would I go about adding one of these points to my reviews but also increasing their level? For instance, I’d like to have the ます grammar point be set to Expert 1 like the rest of my N5 points.

If you go to the writeup page there is an option to add to your reviews on the right-hand side (if you haven’t done so already).

Once you have clicked that (or if it has already been added to your reviews) you should see your progress. You can click on any level and choose to set your progress to that level. It should look something like the below.

Enjoy!

Is the plan to always keep non-JLPT content separated from N5-N1? What I’m wondering is when should I try to learn from that deck if I am unaware of what it builds upon (the “difficulty” level). With N5-N1 we have a defined route to follow.

Is there any way to discover the non-JLPT-content on the site without using the forum posts? I don’t find a deck or section in the bunpro path on it so I wondered if I’m missing something.

It should be here, but I also didn’t find it on the mobile app

The non-JLPT grammar points will remain separate. Currently, non-JLPT is just a general designation based on the fact that those points do not fit into what is typically tested knowledge on the JLPT however it doesn’t necessarily mean that the points are extremely rare or difficult (although they can be).

For the moment, I’d recommend using them as a reference source, and add them to reviews manually as and when you come across them. As a general rule, if you look at the example sentences and they feel manageable then the point is likely the right level of difficulty for you.

Once we’re a bit further along with adding new grammar points we can hopefully share a bit more about the future of non-JLPT grammar!

TIL you can manually add from content to your reviews. This will help a lot to add stuff I already learned from Genki, nice!

Also thanks for all the hard work - my free month just ended and I have subscribed for a year because Bunpro is absolutely amazing for my learning journey.

Will we have a little N0 bar in the dashboard?
