This is a discussion topic for the updated N5 Lesson 7 reading passages. (May 2024)
的当 I am really confused about this word, I can’t find it in any of my usual dictionaries! the furigana show that it’s read as まとあ, any clarification would be a huge help, thanks!
How do you parse て following it?
Try reading it as 的(まと)当て(あて), from 当てる.
Also, it seems that an image search for 的当てゲーム produces some results.
Ahhhhhh yeah okay i see. Thanks for the help, I was tunnel visioning the kanji!
Can anyone explain why “オススメ” is written in katana at the end of the “Coffee” reading? I understand that it could be written like that on a menu/poster, but in the context of the reading I would expect the kanji.
Hey @feete, and welcome to the community!
Although the kanji could be used here, and since I did not write this I cannot say with confidence, but it is probably just a stylistic choice of the writer for emphasis.
Although お勧め, おすすめ, and オススメ all mean the same, they have a slight difference in nuance. お勧め and おすすめ has a more ‘official’ nuance, so you will see it used in writing, and オススメ has a more ‘friendly’ nuance, so it will be used in speech or on things like menus. Using オススメ for this sentence emphasizes that person A and B are having a friendly/casual conversation instead of having a serious discussion.
I hope this answers your question!
That makes sense, thank you!
