Number of Users per Level

Hello,

I was very bored, so I extracted some data from this page and got this nice little graph out of it (Last update on 26 October 2020). Orange is the data for 26 October 2020, while blue shows the amount of users for 16 July 2019.

First attempt with incorrect data

Does anyone know why there’s this little peek all of a sudden at Level 51? It goes from 23 users to 148 users. Was there a recent change to change the level range form 50 to 100? It seems like quite a strange spread for something that may have been such a recent change.

Here are the numbers if you want them for yourself

This is quite interesting indeed.

Though, I’m a bit surprised that there aren’t any people at high levels. I wonder if no one has actually completed the entire course…

@Pep95 Interesting I will take a look at the data. There shouldn’t be a big jump like that I don’t think, I wonder if some people are ending up with multiple level badges throwing the count off?

It’s actually impossible to get to level 100 yet as the XP required to get there requires you to complete all of N1 (which we haven’t added much of yet).

Ah interesting! Might have found a little bug there then. The increase is very sudden, its almost like there are all of a sudden two exponential functions there.

Another thing that I noticed was that the part after 50 is quite a smooth graph, while the part of the graph before 50 has quite a large variance. Maybe this could give a clue as to what the error might be?

EDIT: I double checked the page again just to be sure, and that data agrees with my graph.

Keep in mind that this data only includes users that have visited the forum at least once.

I know that it’s a well-known fact within the Japanese learning community that lots of people hit a wall when they reach N2 because the grammar becomes super complicated, so they take the attitude of “well I know enough now, I’ll just stop there.”
Level 50 would work out at about that stage, but I agree the peak does seem ridiculously high even taking that into consideration. Also it peaks very quickly rather than a steady increase.

I would be curious to see what it looks like taking into account how much longer it takes to level from 50+ compared to 1-20.

I’m not quite sure what the pattern there is.
Am I correct in saying that it is (future level)*100 xp to go to the next level?

EDIT: Given the above is true, this is what that would look like:

The graph is smushed to the left of course, since you need less XP for the first section of levels.

For clearer data, I also thought it was nifty to have an algorithmic plot as well:

EDIT2: It seems that that approximation was not entirely correct.
When I reach level 23, I will have 25600 XP, but according to my graph, I will only have achieved 23100 XP. So I’m missing something somewhere.

wow this is really interesting, commenting to come back to this discussion. Surprising there are no people higher than level 84.

Well, and Bunpro only recently added N1, so I wonder if those were subscription users who hit the ‘end’ of Bunpro at the time and stopped using it.

Then that would also be a lot of people who hit the end, did a little, and then suddenly stopped again.

If it were just a peak I’d agree, but this behaviour is still quite strange.

Yes I can verify the issue with the multiple level badges. It seems like I am currently still part of level 51 and level 52.

Ah, so it might be that starting from 51, the graph is cumulative?
Taking that into account, this is what the graph would look like:

Jup! That’s the issue!
Here are the graphs based on XP, with a linear and logarithmic X-axis.

I think this should be the correct representation.
I updated the images in the top post.

I’m surprised there even are level 84 people, actually! They must be using the “I know this!” button liberally. I felt guilty just by using it on N5 stuff…

Wow interesting, thanks for making this! Surprised that level the level 35-ish has so few when I’m still in the N4 range…

I’m not really sure why people are binding their JLTP Nx range with maximum XP

According to this, you get XP based on what part of a streak you are in. So why would it be linked to N level? Do you lose the XP when you get something wrong again?
If I make a mistake in my reviews at Streak 10, go back to Streak 8 (wait does that even happen in BunPro?), can I then get the 80 and 90XP again?

Can someone explain?

Cool! Personally, I would love to see the evolution of subscription users over time but I guess that is confidential

I would love to see those peaks and try to find if there is any correlation to anything (eg. Dec Sale, before/after JLPT), and also if the user base is growing at a healthy pace!

You are right. For example, I am level 50+ but I am only halfway through N3.

You do not lose XP when you get something wrong, you just remain at the same streak until you get it right the next time.

As far as I noticed, you can only obtain any particular streak exp once. That is why there is a cap to how high users can level up right now. Otherwise, some people will be redoing N5 material like crazy and get some crazy high level.

Ah! That explains it. I think I’ve been doing wanikani for too long.

So it’s 5850 xp per item.

A total of 723 items are currently available. So that is a maximum of 4,229,550 xp. Seems like level 100 is already possible?

Sorry to divert, are you using Android? I just noticed my iOS grammar counts are lower than your version (my version is from June 26th). I have 160 for N4, 199 for N3 and 197 for N2.
