Role: Content Team Member

Description:

  • We are looking for a native or bilingual English speaker , with a high level of Japanese, who has a passion for helping others learn languages. A big part of language learning is exposure to the language and all of its nuances. As a content team member, you will work on improving the existing content on the site, such as writing example sentence translations, expanding accepted answers, and replying to feedback.
  • This role is fully remote and the hours are 100% flexible, either with part time or full time hours.
  • This role is expected to last for 6-12 months but has the possibility of becoming a long term full time position for the right candidate.

Requirements:

  • Native English (or bilingual proficiency in your native language and English) with a high level of written/understood Japanese (confidence speaking is a plus but not a necessity).
  • A desire to always be growing. We believe the ability to learn is more important than what you know right now.
  • Ability to put yourself in the shoes of the end user, beginner or advanced, and ideate new ways to help them learn more effectively.

Salary: ¥2300/hr

Are you willing to wait a little while to consider many applicants? I wish I could do it, but my Japanese is quite low right now. I was wondering what level (N5-N1) do I have to be to be considered?

I guess it’s about being native at Japanese as well to understand if sentences sound natural for natives

While there is technically no hard limits, the work being done requires a high level of Japanese (but not native level).

Probably something like N1-N2 since it has to be almost native

@MOA_304 Keep studying and when you get to that N2-N1 range reach out. While we post positions like this for specific roles we want to fill as soon as possible, we opportunistically hire people who reach out to us from time to time. We are always on the look out for people passionate about Bunpro who have a complementary skillset to help us keep improving the site.

We are hiring for this particular role because we have a lot of content on the site (over 100k example sentences now) and both Chihiro and Haruna enjoy creating new sentences. We need more native English speakers who are able to provide quality translations of new sentences and improve the translations of the old ones/adjust them as they are changed.

Here is an example of some of the sentences the role would be working with

We also have a growing dataset of 30m+ attempted answers we like to go through periodically and see what common mistakes are being made and look at why that is and try to turn those into learning opportunities for future users who make the same mistake.

Cool! Thanks for the reassurance. I’ve seen stuff like this before actually, so I could learn it as I see it. I’m a native English speaker (born in North America, specifically the U.S.), so there are half of the requirements right there! Not only that, but I’m also decent at inferring translations based on the words I know and the particles. However, I do have a couple more questions (sorry):

  1. What’s the minimum age requirement to remotely work this position (I’m a minor)?
  2. Can I use an accurate translator to help if I’m stuck and learn the kanji/ other words as they appear? (If I was hired)?
  3. ( this question might be kinda stupid) Do I need a resume?

You are lucky you have started learning so young! You have a lot of time ahead of you. I’d say spend a few years digging into Japanese (not at the expense of everything else of course) and work you way up to consistently reading and consuming Japanese media. You have a lot of time to develop your abilities which will open doors for you in the future.

The job seem interesting but I’m sadly not a native English speaker, even though I’m quite fluent in English I don’t think I can be on par with a native.

Maybe an interesting question for those who’ll apply: are they eligible for a visa? I know it’s a remote position but since you seem to be based in Osaka, it wouldn’t seem impossible.
