Well, we have now officially entered the year of the dragon and the year of the coolest new year cards (年賀状) that I have ever sent! This is of course the most obvious character to have as the first of the year, but if anyone has any requests, please feel free to drop them in!

Happy to have you back! Glad to hear of your safe return, excited to watch this thread as it continues to grow! I may give a couple of them a try myself if I feel like picking up a brush pen.

マットさん、おかえりなさい!

Today is coming of age day (成人の日) in Japan, so this one was the obvious choice. It’s a lovely time in the country, as anyone who is celebrating coming of age (turning 20) in the last year is celebrating - the guys in their cool suits and the girls in their beautiful kimonos. It really is a fantastic time to be in Japan.

I like how 図 starts to look more like a map (or perhaps a sketch of sorts) in the different calligraphy forms.

I’m quite proud of the balance I managed to achieve in the 楷書 version of this one. Not so much in the other two though!

It’s always interesting to me how the 草書 writing of the radical 目 changes so often. Compared to how it’s written out when you did the 草書 form of 眠、they’re completely different. Have you noticed any major similarities between all the different 草書 forms you’ve drawn over time?

One or two… like 糸偏 and 言偏. Also 口. But I’m mostly totally clueless!

OK, so I won a mini yakitori grill on the bingo game at my work’s enkai just before Christmas and I decided to use it for the first time tonight!

How about taito?

I always found 𱁬 a bit disappointing because, while very complex, it’s just an amalgamation of fairly mundane kanji in a visually unappealing way (IMO).

I vastly prefer 𰻞 when it comes to absurdly overcomplicated characters, but I don’t think that it exists in Japanese, technically.

Yeah, I agree, but I still think that taito would still take more time since it has more strokes. But I agree that biang is visually more appealing (although it is a Chinese character, not Japanese :eyes:)

Also, is there a way to display these characters like biang and taito on Windows? Currently, it looks like this for me:

Ah, I’m on Linux myself so I’m not entirely sure, but I presume it’s a font issue? I think Google’s Noto fonts have those characters but I’m not entirely sure nor do I know how to install fonts on windows: Noto Home - Google Fonts

It looks like this for me:

Thanks, I will try installing Google’s Fonts and let you know if it worked!

(This is why I prefer Linux…)

How long do you reckon it would take me to write the stroke order section for that?? :scream:

It doesn’t, but it can still be seen in various restaurants. The only reason those bloody noodles are even famous is because of that character. I can, however, write it correctly without looking at any help. The stroke order would be an absolute pain to write, though, so I’m not goint to do it on here unless I have a stupidly bored day.

I’d just write them in roman characters and pop a link to the wiki page on if I were you. I can’t see them on my end either.

Sorry I’m late for yesterday’s character. I don’t think it’s too difficult to see how this one blends between the writing styles.

Hi!

いつものように、この素晴らしい書道を教えてくれてありがとう。

The 草書 version of this kanji is just one stroke, right?

When looking at the 草書, I always tend to see people doing all sort of things gracefully, keeps reminding me of Picasso’s animal sketches.

In this instance, it would be some lady leisurely sitting on a chair with a lighted cigarette on the right hand whilst looking at something on her other side. In the case of ‘’, it was two people jumping around skirmishing with swords.

ところで、草書体についてウィキペディアの記事を読みました。 面白くて良い読書の練習なんです。

良い週末を

Aight, it doesn’ appear to be the font, because I just couldn’t get it working. I suspect that I’d have to install an additional Unicode character set. I will look into that somewhen later.

Since it has 84 strokes, I bet at least one or two whole days.

But, I think it would be very interesting to see the stroke order and to see a version that has been written/drawn by a human
